Today was our full day in 4000 island :)
My plan was to wake up at 6:30 to get some photos of the sunrise from our balcony! I actually managed to wake up! Stepped outside at 6:35 and it was already broad daylight! Damn! I'm gonna have to get up at like 5:30!! Maybe il just settle for sunset! The cover photo is the outcome:... Pretty cool!
We got up and went to get breakfast at some hut down the strip, again we went under the impression we could contact home on the supposedly free wifi which didn't exist! I got a bread roll with jam which is actually marmalade and I'm sick of iced coffee so tried an iced ovaltine shake! I've not had ovaltine in years, reminds me of my nana's house! Only when I drank it years ago it would have to be boiling hot to send me to sleep in the cold nights and here I'm drinking it to cool me down and wake me up!!
The prices are more expensive than Cambodia here but still not too bad! I think breakfast was $4 each which is only £2 something but I prefer to convert to dollars, that way I think things are more expensive and then I haggle more and my money stretches a little further :)
Bumped into the two Canadian girls from next door, I asked them if they'd showered yet as the water in our guesthouse is brown! Constantly! They confirmed that the water does come from the river! Yuk! One of the girls just braved it and took a shower, her sister washed herself down with soap and then rinsed with bottled water! A little dramatic but believe me, the water is soooo brown!
After talking to them I thought I'm just gonna shower as normal then rinse myself after with the bottled water but then I didn't see the point! The restaurants wash there dishes in the river which we eat from, and the locals wash there clothes in it! May as well just roll with it!
Our toilet also doesn't flush, we have a proper toilet that you can sit on, you don't have to squat which is a luxury... but the flush is a bucket full of brown water sat in the corner, you take a pan full of water and just pour it down - how's that for the Ritz ;)
In the afternoon we chilled out and caught up on blogs etc laying on the bed by the river :) there's nothing to do here it is just a resting point to chill out before heading off to the capital city of Vientiane but its a cool place that's really chilled nice atmosphere and the scenery is pretty! For someone wanting to keep busy, you would be bored senseless... For someone who hates people and is completely happy with there own company, listening to music in there own little world (loner types like myself) this place is perfect!
At 5:00 we went to eat in an Indian restaurant, Sebastian who we met in Phnom penh said the Indian here is amazing and he lived off of it? Really, I wasn't sold! Still, we gave it a whirl and it was amazing!! I only had a chicken Korma but it was so good I would definitely eat it again! Oh yeah I'm now back to eating chicken, theres cows and lots of chickens on this island but not a single piggy so I ain't going anywhere near the so called 'pork' anymore! It was cooked by an Indian guy who delivers the dish himself, his hands are bright orange!! Either he's been washing too many pots in the river water or he's using too much turmeric! Or is it cumin that stains your hands? I don't know, I'm sure it's one of the two!
A wild dog came and took a huge poo right next to our table whilst we were eating, it just sat there steaming away right next to us, when the cook then sat at the table behind us, stroking the dog like nothing had happened! Awkward much?!?!?
Also here you ask for a Miranda and you get Fanta, you ask for a coke you get Pepsi and ask for a sprite you'll get a 7up! That's another reason why I won't have pork here, just in case I end up with dog or maybe a sheep!
We walked back to our guesthouse to get some photos of the sunset and met Megan on the way... There was a huge cow (an actual cow, I'm not being rude to some poor tourist) swimming in the river like it was nobody's business! She didn't mind me taking her photo either, but i didn't want to get too close!
Then we went to the same bar as last night for drinks, the bar owner, Chais offered us a game of Jenga! He's so bored all of the time!
This place actually has wifi so quickly Skyped mum, she was stressing out that she'd not heard from me in one whole day! God I'm mean to her... :/
She thinks I've deffo contracted malaria for not taking my pills for two days and offered to pay for my flight home... Well that's handy, il bare that in mind when September comes around ;)
The two Canadians then came and sat with us and stayed up for drinks! Its nice how everyone is so friendly! And its fascinating that we mix with locals and Australians and canadians and we despise the British! (for the life of me I can't remember the girls names, I feel bad as we spent all night with them, but we meet so many different people and I was pretty drunk by this point too) plus Facebook won't let me add them so I know there not reading this so hey-ho there ya go! It was nice having someone to share my love of Malibu with too, finally... Someone that understands me!!! She did make me promise I would eat a peanut butter and jellow sandwich when I get back home though, really? That's just wrong!
They also said they were considering checking into another hotel down the road, it's the only hotel on the island that filters the water!! I was shocked, why am I not staying here! I'm busy washing myself down in cow pee! But this hotel starts at $32 a night which is still really good but, a massive increase from the $7 we pay! And is it really gonna be much of an improvement when it's only 4 doors down from our guesthouse? I think not!
At midnight precisely, Chais came and demanded the money off of us, he wasn't waiting around! And we know when we're not wanted! But to be honest this was the last place on the island still open, everywhere else was now in total darkness! We all walked home, nearly getting attacked by a pack of wild dogs on the way back, that wasn't scary! :/
