Hello all! Since leaving Cusco three days ago we have been on a whirlwind adventure visiting 3 different cities and taking in a lot of sights. From Cusco we took a night bus into Nazca where we immediately booked a flight over the nazca lines for that afternoon. The flight was really exciting and really scary all at the same time. We were in a small 3 passenger airplane that allows you to feel every bit of turbulence you hit...it didn´t help that the pilot liked to tilt from one side to the other quite quickly in order to give you the best view of the lines possible. It was a stomach turning ride to say the least, but well worth it. We then headed 30 km out of town to visit the Chincherro cemetery. Here you can find all sorts of mummies and bones hanging out in open graves...quite odd and creepy all at the same time. There are also bones scattered all around the site from when the grave robbers came through and pulled all the burials apart.
The next morning we took a bus to Huacachina where we found a hostal with a pool, a poolside bar, plenty of hammocks, 6 pet parrots, 2 cats and a capuchin monkey...odd. From here we rented a dune buggy with a crazy driver and were taken out to some of the biggest sand dunes in the world. It was a gnarly experience. He would drive us to the top of the dunes and we would get to sandboard down them...Michael had a ¨small¨ wipeout that he refers to as the ¨sand enema¨and consequently i went down most of the dunes on my stomach...which is much more fun anyways as you go much faster!
The next day we headed to Pisco to take a tour of the Ballesta Islands. which are frequently referred to as ¨the poor man´s galapagos¨and since we can´t afford to go the real galapagos islands it seemed quite fitting. Here we saw a ton of different kinds of birds including pelicans, boobies, and penguins. We also saw hundreds of sea lions and little sea lion cubs. The Ballesta Island are famous for the amount of poop that has been deposited on them by birds. Back in the day they used to take this guana and use it for fuel...it used to be as much as 50 feet deep in some parts. Oh, we forgot to mentioned that you can smell the islands before you can even see them!!!
We are now in Lima where we will spend the night before heading north to see more ruins and hopefully end up at the beautiful resort town of Mancora. Happy mothers day to all you mothers! We will try and add photos again soon...we´ve been having some technical difficulties...including a broken camera! Hope everyone is well.
Love kristy and Michael
