Hello everyone!
We´ve been in Puno on the shore of Lake Titicaca for about 5 days now. We arrived by bus in the evening on the 23rd and immediately booked a trip out to a site called Sillustani where Incan and Pre-Incan funerary towers can been seen. However, there was a strike the next day and protests going on everywhere, consequently it seemed the entire town shut down for the day and our trip was cancelled. We spent most of the day sitting in a park and we even sunk so low as to head back to our hostel to watch t.v. (not exactly how we wanted to spend my birthday!) Luckily in the late evening the restaurants opened for dinner so we didn´t have to starve!
We managed to get to Sillustani the next day and the towers were quite amazing to see. We also met up with our friends from Sweden whom we met on the way to Arequiepa and the 4 of us decided to head to Isla Taquile on Lake Titicaca for the night. The boat ride was an excruciatingly slow 3 hours with a short stop over at the floating islands. The floating island are made out of reeds taken from the lake and there is a small community of local who inhabit them. They were quite interesting but have been extremely effected by tourism. Once we made it to Isla Taquile we met a local family who we stayed with for the night. Because there is limited electricity on the island it was almost pitch black and as a result the stars were amazing to look at. The next morning Johnathan (the son of the local family) took us to the small incan ruins on the island. The island has been continuously inhabited for around 2000 years.
The four of us then started to make our way back to the port where we were to be picked up and brought back to Puno. Luckily we gave ourselves a lot of time to get there as we got quite lost and ended up walking 40 minutes uphill in the wrong direction. (Michael and I just considered it training for the Inca trail next week!)
We're now back in Puno and will be heading to Cusco by bus tomorrow morning. We start the Inca trail on May 3rd and will give another update when we get back. We will also add more pictures once we get them off of our cameras (hopefully before we head onto the trail!)
Kristy and Michael.
