We almost missed out on Battle and the finish of our 1066 history tour because we didn't understand the history of this town. It is in fact where the actual battle occurred. The large Abbey was built by William the Conquerer, dedicated the huge amount of men killed on this site and the altar was placed at the exact spot where king Harold was believed to have been shot through the eye with an arrow, which ended the battle.
It now is a beautiful country town with lots of charm and the audio tour and stroll around the battlefield finished a great history lesson for us, very well done.
It is late afternoon but we decide to go to see 'Bodium Castle', on the way to Maresfield. We drive through some really beautifully English countryside on the way with many blossom trees and fields and rows strewn with daffodils.
