After a 3 hour ferry ride we are now back in Picton on the south island. Both Michael and I have been looking forward to this just because it's the place with lots of cool stuff to do.
We stayed 3 days in Nelson the first day we got in quite late so all we did was relax and have a wonder in the city which like every other city we have been to closes at 6 pm. The next morning we had to get up at 6 am arghhh so early. Michael is so much better at getting up then me I really hate it but we where both looking forward to this kayak trip to Abel Tasman. Abel Tasman is a 1 hour drive from Nelson it's a national park that borders the Tasman Sea. The colour of the water and the rock formations are amazing. We started out by learning how to read the wind and how to get back into a kayak if you capsize. By 10 am we were on our way to the water. When we got picked up it was overcast but by the time we started paddling the clouds had disappeared and it was blue skies for miles. Abel Tasman is known as the place with the most sunshine in the whole of New Zealand.
We were a group of 9 people incl. our guide. It was Michael and I, Sean and Dana a really nice couple from Canada we had meet a few days earlier and a Irish couple and 2 girls from Israel. We were out on the water until about 5 pm with nice breaks on some of the beautiful beaches.
We were staying on a houseboat for the night so after having "parked" our kayaks we got picked up by and taken out to the houseboat that was conveniently located in a really nice bay.
The next day it was back in the kayak. We didn't head out until 8.30 because someone didn't want to get out of bead I wont mention any names J
Today it was a self guided trip and we headed out with Sean and Dana. We took our time stopping at just about every lake and beach we could fine. It was so beautiful. We finished the day of at the seal colony just of shore were we got really close to the seals. Someone tried to pet them with the paddle but it didn't quite turn out the way it was intended ups….
We finally made it back to the pick up place a really nice beach and then back to where we had original started. It was a great 2 days we had so much fun but quite a challenge agreeing on things when you are stuck in the same boat HA HA J but some how we both made it back J
Never the less I dint think we have ever been this tired on our trip before.
Our itinerary from here on takes us from Nelson - Greymouth - Franz Joseph and the Queenstown.
