We came into Kaikoura which I still having troubles pronouncing even though I have been there. Kaikoura is on the east of the southern island. Michael tells me it used to be an old whaling station. That would probably explain why there is a house built with bones from a whale. They are also known for having delicious fresh crayfish (what we in Denmark would call lobster) yum J.
When we first got there I think both Michael and I thought "right, this is going to be a quite night". It is literally just one road but we check in to the backpackers and went for a walk.
We had a look in a restaurant to see just how expensive these crayfish are and they where NZ $ 85 for a hole one (that approx DKK 350,-). That is still very cheap compared to Australia (my private chef told me) and even more cheap compared to Danish prises. So we thought YES lets have that for dinner.
Because its was only 1 pm we thought we would go for a walk to see this house we had read about in our Lonely Planet guide book not realising its quite a way out and neither of us could be bothered to walk all that way. So we found a bike shop that rented bikes so we rode out there. In NZ it's mandatory to wear "stack hats" helmets. So we looked quite funny. Either of us had had one on since we where kids.
We got out to the house which was a huge disappointment, it was JUST a house nothing special about it. We thought we would keep riding a bit further because we had been told we could walk up a part of one of the many mountains that surround the little town. On our way out we rode past this little stand on the side of the road that had 4 tables but it was packed. They had hole crayfish for only NZ $ 45 so it was half price compared to the restaurant and there is nothing I like better that half price J (thanks dadJ) Michael went over to have a look at the fish just to be sure they did not look old but they where fine. So we went out to the mountain had a great view and then went back to eat crayfish. It was sooooo yum and Michael got every little bit of meet out of that thing even the meet the fish was hiding in the legs…
On the way back to the hostel we went to the supermarket bought some food and a bottle of wine and then jumped into to the (as it turned out) REALLY hot spa at the hostel. There where a couple of other people there and it was a great afternoon. It is a little like being back home because the sun dos not go down until after 9 0´clock really nice.
Well I think that was the whole story of Kaikoura J
Next stop is Picton going on to Wellington!!
