Dear Diary,
Travelled from Auckland to Paihia (Bay of Islands) on 23/11 & arrived about 1pm. Went out on a Waka (pronounced Woka) with 1 other person & 2 locals, which is a traditional Mauri canoe. Went to a small island off the mainland, where we caught & cooked mussels, had some wine & sat about chatting before heading back. A very enjoyable afternoon even though the weather was a bit overcast.
Had a good group of people in my dorm, all friends from Epsom area & a girl they met in Fiji. A few of us joined the rest of the bus for a BBQ & a few beers at the bar next to the hostel, which was really good for getting to know some of the others on the bus.
24/11 - Went on a day trip to Cape Reinga in order to go sandboarding & to see where the Tasmin Sea & PAcigic Ocaen meet. Unfortunately the weather in the area the last couple of days hadn't been too good so we only got to do the sandboarding. It was really good fun despite the wind being so strong that the sand blasted your legs & feet - ouch!!
25/11 - Was due to go kayaking but it was cancelled, so ended up doing thw Waka again with some of those in my dorm. It was so much better this time round partly due to the weather as it was sunny, hot & not a single cloud in sight & due to company. Did similar things as before, but was able to spend alot more time on the little beach sunbathing & swimming in the sea. We all had such a great time that I was convinced to stay an extra night in Paihia.
Met a really nice couple who are working in the area for the next 6 months before heading to the south island who tried to convince me that I should stay there & get myself a job - it was a tough decision!!
We all went out for a good drinking session as bus back to Auckland wasn't leaving until 3pm the next day.
