MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
It's morning again! Everyone slept well thanks to ear plugs to block out the traffic noise for those that need them. Liz and Milton do a couple of laps of the nature walk and see a squirrel and a rabbit . We are a bit later getting started but once on the road it's all systems go. Every morning we are so enthusiastic, it's like it's the first day again. First today is the Fantastic Caverns. These are Limestone Caves on a very large scale . We decide to take the tour as our ting is perfect and there is no waiting . David is our guide and he is so stilted in his delivery of the information that he had to tell us when he told a joke. The tour is a wagon towed by a jeep. No walking involved. We go about half a mile into cave. The caves have enormous caverns in parts and they were used in the past as a speakeasy during prohibition days, meeting place for secret societies, and for concerts. It's nice and cool inside as the temperature outside is already hot. Morning tea today is in transit. Cold drinks and tomato and cheese on crackers all prepared while motoring along old Route 66. Next stop is in Carthage. This is a pretty little town . It's claim to fame besides being on Route 66 is its City Hall, Whee Bridge and a number of beautiful historical houses. We have lunch at Iggy's cafe which is a 20 year old diner which has been furnished in the style of the 60's. its pretty cool and the food is good. From here we click the heels of our red shoes and 'look Toto, where in Kansas' . Kansas has only 13 mile of Route 66 but according to Melba the Mouth from the cars movie, it's an important part and should not be missed. Galena is the home of the tow truck that was the inspiration for Tow Mator in the movie Cars. And as we pull up at the site, there he is! We go inside the Cars on Route 66 cafe and were not prepared for the welcome we received. This is where Melba I mentioned before is. Galena looks a bit like a ghost town but according to Melba it is on the rise. Can she talk! We had the past, the present and the future all wrapped up in a 30 second monologue, no time to breathe. It's hilarious , then this young girl turns up and goes behind the counter to take over her shift from Melba and within 60 seconds we have her life story as well! Yep, that's Melba's niece! We finally get out of the cafe after the boys have enjoyed a very cold beer and we are now armed with a wealth of information. Still in Kansas we drive through Baxter Springs and pass the Field of Dreams Baseball field - Home of the American Legion Baseball team and a number of historic homes. this area is very focused on the American Civil war as a guy was telling us earlier in Carthage that Missouri area was in a tug of war between the North and the South. This is where they have these reenactments of the battles. It's not far down the old Route 66 that we leave Kansas and enter Ooooooklahoma where the wind comes sweeping cross the plain!......... Sing a long, I know you want to! We think we will stop at Tulsa tonight so we have a bit of a way to go but for now we stay on the old road to pass through. Quapaw, and Commerce ( the birthplace of Mickey Mantle - famous baseball player) and is where Bonnie and Clyde killed Cal Campbell. Next we pass through Miami ( not the Florida one obviously....but wouldn't that be nice). Full steam ahead now for Tulsa . Liz and I are in the 'office' sourcing accommodation which I must say is a trial trying to find somewhere away from the train lines and major highways. We settle for Cherry Hill Park and hope for the best. We have our customary Walmart stop to get the requirements for Tacos for dinner. Yes Holly that was Dad's choice! Cherry Hill is a quiet, large RV park and largely residential. It's quiet, it's clean and hot. Thank goodness that Harvey has Air con. Goodnight Harvey xx
