Today I had my heart set on seeing the pope. Wednesday is the only day that he is out in public for a substantial length of time (Sundays he is only on the balcony for a short time) and even though I am not catholic I really wanted to see him. I got a late start and at the stazione centrale Roma I had a difficult time getting tickets for the metro. By the time I got to the Vatican I was about a half an hour late and I thought there would be no chance now to see the pope but I decide to go to saint peter's square anyways. I got there and he was still giving his address! I got to see just how many people were on a pilgrimage from far away (and had purchased tickets) when the cardinals of their native tongue read off the different diocese represented. The pope thanked all the different groups (again in each of their languages), then lead everyone in a song, and ended by blessing everyone in attendance and their loved ones back home. After the pope left (in the popemobile!) I toured the Basilica and then climbed 551 steps to the cupola (top of the Basilica). Afterwards I decided to try to quickly visit the Vatican museum to see the Sistine chapel (that is a picture of the ceiling that I was naughty enough to take)! For dinner I ate at a place next door to my hostel called Mamma Angela's. I had Shiraz, caprese, and ravioli. Then for dessert I had tiramisu. I've had tiramisu twice before: once somewhere in America (it was kinda soggy and too sweet) and earlier today at the Vatican museum (it was pretty dry but good flavor). At Angela's it was the perfect consistency and flavor! After my waiter brought me a shot of some sweet and very alcoholic beverage "on the house."
