Spent four days walking the Milford Track; considered to be one of the greatest treks in the world. It certainly was a challenge; but very much worth it to be amongst some of the most incredible scenery I have ever seen in my life.
Three days of glorious sunshine and one day of the wettest, wildest weather we have encountered on our trip so far! This was more than expected, though: Milford Sound is one of the wettest places on earth! We looked damn cool in our waterproof trousers, anyway...although it did take us around two days to dry out. (Literally!) The scenery was spectacular; from mountain passes and enormous waterfalls to tranquil green waters and lush, dense rainforest undergrowth. The sunshine made these canopied parts of the walk look like enchanted forest; with dust dancing about in shafts of light and deep shadows on the forest floor.
We were usually the last to arrive at our hut when the days walk was over, but hey! It's the taking part that counts. We didn't finish last, either...infact, not even close to last. Bit of a hare and tortoise situation, we felt. I almost pointed this out to some smug b******, middle aged, pro walker...but Lucy restrained me. Lol.
Took a cruise on Milford Sound with our aching calves at the end of the track. Yet more outstanding scenery right out to the Tasman Sea. The sunlight created a beautiful rainbow right across the opening to the Sound; inbetween two enormous mountains.
Driving back along the Milford Road was equally spectacular; as we watched the sky and the clouds turning pink over the moody mountain peaks.
We slept rather well that night.
