Back To Civilization
I've spent the last week in Badgingarra, Australia where I've worked on a fish farm for a week. The family who I worked for was so nice and generous. They had 25 ponds of fish and we would feed, catch, and sort fish. They raised silver perch and goldfish. They make weekly runs down to Perth to sell the fish to the thriving Asian community. It definitely was a new experience for me. I learned a lot about fish farming and about Austrlian life. Badgingarra is in the middle of no where which is why I haven't written in a while. It is made up of about 50 farming families. The farms are made up of thousand of acres of land and I couldn't see anyone in sight on the farm I was on. On the farm I got some very delicious meals. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks were provided for me as well as accomodations in exchange for my work. The meals were so fresh given that the family grew a lot of their own food (eggs, fruit, etc.) and of course the fish was so fresh. I had a great time, and I'm so pleased that I found this method of traveling. One of the hosts on the farm took me and another worker who is from Austria on a kangaroo night ride. We saw dozens of kangaroos in the wild just jumping around. We visited a neighbor yesterday and saw a pet kangaroo named Raindrop. She even had a collar on the 'roo. It was crazy. I'm writing currently from a different farm further north up the western coast of Australia. It is closer to civilization. I'm staying with a couple who owns a spa and they run a furniture making business. They make the furniture from recycled wood. I start work on this farm tomorrow, so we'll see what this week brings. The weather is warm and I have to put on a ton of sunscreen everyday so that I don't get burned. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Oh yes, Thanksgiving. I got to eat with that family of my high school friend on Thanksgiving night. They were so generous and kind to invite me and the food was great. They wanted all the details how Americans spend Thanksgiving and what the Macy's parade looked like. I felt really special to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with them. They had such great food and even pumpkin pie!
