The last weekend of traveling had finally arrived. My roommate Julie and I were headed to Interlaken, Switzerland for the weekend. We chose to fly through Geneva and take the train while others in our program chose a 12-hour bus ride. According to all of them, we chose the right mode of transportation. We left Thursday night and arrived in Geneva late before hopping on the train to transport us to Interlaken.
The next morning we looked out the window of our adorable traditional chalet hotel to see the most beautiful views. We had a straight shot to the Jungfrau Mountain which was absolutely gorgeous! We filled up on the complementary breakfast. Since everything in Switzerland is very overpriced we wanted to fill up for the day. Then we set out to explore Interlaken and the towns surrounding it. There is not much to do in Interlaken itself so we went to view the lakes surrounding the city. The views were actually unreal, I felt like we were looking at a painting.
That night we went on a traditional Christmas hike that we had signed up for. Unfortunately it turned out to be a long hike up a mountain. Then we had to stand in line for an hour to get a piece of bread with cheese (raclette), some hot wine and some broth. It turned out to be not as much of a Christmas feast as we thought it would be. After our failed Christmas hike, Julie and I decided to stop in a restaurant and order some fondue. It was delicious but so overpriced. Then we walked to the center of town to go through the Christmas market that was set up for the weekend. They had all sorts of traditional Swiss products. Cheese, wine, wood, hats, chocolate, it was all there. We then decided to call it a night and sit in bed eating Swiss chocolate and watching mindless TV, something I haven't done in months (although it was in German).
The plan for Saturday was to travel up to "The Top of Europe" to see three different countries at one time. Unfortunately, it was raining and foggy in the morning so we did not want to pay the ungodly amount of money to not see very much. We contemplated joining the cliff jumping or paragliding groups but instead met up with some other friends to hike by some waterfalls. We took the train up to the first town in the mountains, Laterbrunn. There we got some amazing views of a traditional Swiss town. We stopped in the only bar in town to use the restroom and ended up staying for a few hours drinking some beers and eating some traditional swiss food. The day ended up very fun even though we had turned down participating in some crazier, adrenaline-pumping activities.
After our hike we headed to the chocolate show that we had signed up for earlier in the weekend. They showed us how they make chocolate and then let us taste test a TON of chocolate. We wanted to get our money's worth so we ate every last piece. It was so delicious!
Saturday night we decided to live it up a little and head out to the only club in town with some friends from Rome. The place was more legit than I thought; they even had bouncers and a list you had to be on. The atmosphere was fun and you could tell that every single young person in town was at the club.
The next morning we had a really hard time getting up after the night of clubbing. We headed to Geneva on the train to catch our flight back to Rome. The train took us right through the Alps and I got to see some of the most beautiful views. Taking the train through Switzerland was very worthwhile. Once we arrived at the airport we indulged in some Asian food since we don't see much of it in Italy. Then we hopped in the plane and headed home to Rome to enjoy our last 2 weeks abroad.
