Our first stop down south was Koh Tao and we'd managed to book the travel at a really good price. It was 2nd class but we were assured that it was a good enough standard for a 7 hour train journey... Yeah they were wrong. It was literally the 'TRAIN OF DEATH' We made friends with quite a few roaches and managed to slip a few times in the aisle, on the spit that was hocked up by the 'hygienic locals'. For the last 3 hours we opted for the standing position outside the toilets which made it a lot more bearable.
I'm glad to say that when we finally got to Koh Tao, things started looking up. The beaches were heaven, coconut trees everywhere... Just pure paradise. All the locals were so laid back. We'd never felt safer. We only wanted to stay for a week but ended up here for two weeks which included a trip to Namnuang, the most beautiful island we've been to so far.
Namnuang is known for diving and snorkelling due to it's coral. We swam with black tip reef sharks, trigger fish (nasty b*****s) and lots of nemos to mention a few! Also did the worlds only island to island zipwire. The food was delicious and we'd established that everything we were paying for from our arrival on Thailand (especially food) was about a third of UK prices or less.
Jay experienced his first illness in Thailand thanks to a few suspect mussels on his Pizza. It was interesting going to a local Pharmacy describing food poisoning symptoms with gestures (front and back!!) but also good to know that they're happy to hand over any sort of drug over the counter without a prescription!!
The beaches were where we spent most of our time. You could sleep under coconut trees where mel wouldn't lie any closer than 20 meters for fear of being killed by a falling coconut (unless they were freshly plucked!).
We also made friends with a stray dog, we say stray as he was getting thinner and thinner by the second. This was something we had to get used to everywhere in Thailand though. There were dogs at every corner, some well looked after and some in desperate need of a vet.
We did two treks off the beaten track. One was through the jungle to get to secluded private beach. The other one was crossing the island from the west coast to the east coast. We managed to get pretty much to the top, the views were great yet again.
