Day 1 - Arrived in Auckland at 8am wihtout any problems - absoultely boiling hot and couldn't check in until 12 so took a bus around the centre to get my bearings. Very nice little places next to centre called ponsonby and parnell. After checking into my dodgy hotel i then went on my travels again around the harbour etc.
Day 2 - took ferry acorss to a small island called Waiheke Island which was gorgeous especially as it was boiling hot too. There are only 7500 people living on it. It has lots of wineries on it but i didn't have enough time to visit them as i had to go and sort my trip out with the travel agent.
Ended up booking a kiwi experience trip where i go around the places on a big green bus with lots of other travellers and stay in...wait for it..... shared dorms!!!!! yes me who has a 20ft personal space!! and the fact it was called "Awesome Adventures"! Anyway i thought it would be the best way to do all the things i wanted to do and see so i booked it without thinking about it too much, although couldn't sleep that night for thinking about who i would be sharing a room with the next night!
Day 3 - early start and the bus had only one seat left for me when i got on but it was ok - most of the people seemed to be travelling on their own and i started to relax (only a bit!). Our first destination was a place called Pahia in the bay of islands. Again the weather was boiling and i had a walk around the beach and then booked to go horseriding in the afternoon. There was only 3 of us in the riding group so it was good and we cantered up a volcano only to reach an amazing view from the top of the crater!! (See photos) then i went to the BBQ in the hostel bar and had a few glasses of the old vino just to make sure i slept!.
Day4 - managed to sleep ok and was very surprised that i didn't hate it! another early start, this time to a place called Cape Reinga which is the very tip of the north island. En route we drove our bus down 90 mile beach which was completely deserted apart from our big yellow bus. We had a stop on the 85m sand dunes and after a very difficult climb to the top we all surfed down the dunes which was really funny. I couldn't manage to climb it again though as i could hardly breathe! The it was up to Cape Reinga where the south pacific meets the tasman sea and then fish and chips on the bus on the way back to the hostel.
Day5 - Went on a feryy ride for 6 hours around all the bays and saw some little blue penguins and a dolphin. I also went on a glass bottom submarine thing and saw the fish being fed. Very sunny and i caught the bus back to Auckland with the rest of the group ready to start the next part of my trip which will take me further down the north island.
I am having problems downloading my photos in this hostel so i shall try again later in the week. You will love them!
