Melissa's & Gemma's Travels
Well what a mad couple of days we have had! there has been some extreme emotions through these days.
I Melissa Smith sat on a huge bird, yes for all those who know me, birds are my favorite thing, but I have sat on an ostrich! It was very scary, i frightened they would bite me! There was the option to ride them, but that was just too much! We also went to the Cango Caves whcih were amazing! this was all in a town calles Oudtshoorn.
We then moved on to Storms river, where me and Gem took on the worlds highest bungy jump! It was great, and i am still sruggling to belive we did, and for anyone who doesn't believe me i have the video and pics to prove it! It was completly different fear and adreniline rush that I have ever experienced! wow and what a view you have from 216m high.
We then moved on to Port Elizabeth to do our township tour. We were in 2 minds about them as you feel as if you are intruding on someones life. Still we are so glad we did. you cannot actually believe the extent of the poverty until you see it with your own eyes! People in our country get benifits and and a house with everything. Well here people don't get any of that. there is such a high rate of un employment that it is nearly 70 percent without jobs.
The gouvernment are buiding brick houses to try and help, but this still doesn't mount to much. all they need is running water, a roof over their heads, and flushing loo, now that is not too much to ask for is it! Most people have to live in cast iron huts, and fend for them selves.
It was a very emotional day, and you just feel completly helpless to change things!
We have moved up the coast a bit to Cintsa. this is a lovely place with a fantastic view. We are staying in a safari tent which overlooks the beach! We arrived by the Baz Bus at 12 noon, and then went to the local school to watch a concert.
My god what a moving couple of hours. These kids are great and their attitude to life is something else. They were so grateful, and happy to perform, and wow did they perform. They sang beautifully, and there dancing was great. there was 117 pupils at the school all from farms near by. they rely on fuding from volentry projects, and donations by back packers from which they do this concert.
It is so humbling to know that these people through it all see the light, and keep going. Music really does bring everyone together. i have made a vow to myself, I will coming back to be involved in a project, where i can make some change. I urge anyone to do it as well, really until you break out of you bubble there is such a bigger picture!!
We are moving on again tomorrow to Coffee Bay, where surprisinly no coffee is grown. We have 2 nights there so we are looking forward to spending time on the beach, as there is not a lot else to do. Bring on the sun tan. after that we will be going to Durban, and then up to jo'burg to do our Safari, which we cannot wait for!
Speak to you soon
