Adelaide to Alice Springs
28th Feb - We left Adelaide at 7.15 to start our trip to the outback! I went with another topdeck your so met lots of people! Our first stop was at the oldest vineyard in Australia! True to the English, the only 4 English travellers were right at the front of the tasting and miles ahead of everyone else! My parents would be proud! We travelled over 400km today which in Australian terms is nothing! We started to see the change in scenery between the green hills to the outback and will only get more hot and dry! The weather dropped a lot today even though it was still 20 degrees which in the UK would be hot, I was freezing! It has also resulted in me having a cold! :( so I'm very sniffly! Tonight we are staying in Quorn and we are watching movies tonight! So just a chilled out night!
1st March - Today we set off at 7am for a day trip on the flinders mountains! We did two hikes, the first was a 3km hike followed by a 8km hike! My grandpa would have been proud! The mountains were beautiful and saw a lot of wildlife through our travels. We stopped off at a small town for ice cream before heading back to Quorn for our dinner, last night I had kangaroo hot pot and today I had fish and chips so a good mix of Ozzie and English! Also turns out that Robert Pattinson was filming his latest film her in Quorn last week so missed out on my chance to meet my future husband! Next time!
2nd March - Today we travelled 618km to Coober Pedy which is the worlds largest opal mining town! We also passed through port augustus and other small towns which some only had a population of 6 people! They produce 85% of the worlds opals! Because of the weather everyone lives underground as the temperature remains the same regardless of the weather outside! Lots of films have also been filmed here so that was interesting to see! We also went to the only underground bar in then world which was pretty awesome!
3rd March - We continued our exploring of Coober Pedy and learnt about the mines and even got to try to find opals ourselves but no luck! We went to the kangaroo orphanage and fed them ! There was a tiny baby kangaroo that's mum had been hit by a car! Very cute! Next stop is Marla Which is 300km away, we travelled through the moon land and dogs line which looked like the moon apparently and then saw the worlds largest fence at 8,000km. Tonight will be out first night camping in swags! Will be an interesting experience! So far I have been eaten alive by mozzys they seem to like my blood! We are also having tacos tonight in our camping setting! It's very strange being out in the dessert and as much as I love the beaches and would never live out here it's a great experience to see the other side!
4th March - Today we ventured towards Kings Canyon. We also changed buses which was a big downgrade to what we were used to! It also meant we met new explorers, so was good to meet new people! The weather was so hot at 35degrees! We then did a 6km hike through the canyon! Took nearly three hours and the sun was very hot and there were flies everywhere but the views were so worth it! It was absolutely magnificent. Our next stop was back to the campsite where we cooked spaghetti bolognaise, I even got my own gluten free pasta as well as other goodies like cookies and chocolate breakfast bars! Definitely getting the special treatment on this trip! We slept in swags under the stars which I have to say was one of the most amazing experiences I have had! Was incredible!
5th March - We continue our exploring to Ayres Rock (Uluru) this is one of the iconic symbols of Australia so I am excited to see it! We did a base walk of 6km, all this walking is making me fit! We are being attacked by so many flies which have a persistence for getting in your face! So I bought a fly net, as much as I look like a complete retard it is probably the best money I have spent! We learnt a lot about the aboriginal culture as Uluru is a sacred rock to them and it was interesting to find out more about the people of Australia! We watched the sun set over Uluru which was beautiful! Tonight we spent the night in swags again under the stars and had a traditional Ozzie BBQ and chucked prawns on the barbie!
6th March - Today we did had a 4.30am start which nearly killed me! It was so worth it though as we saw an amazing sun rise over Ayres rock. We then did a 6 km walk before heading towards Alice Springs where it was time to say good bye to everyone but not before going to the pub which involved a lot of beer and drinking games!
