Well i had a great day in Vinh Long yesterday. I went on a day trip on a boat to the Cai Be floating market which was fascinating and amusing, a popcorn canday factory, experienced local dancing and singing, bike ride and stayed at a local family for the evening which was such good fun and highly recommended for everyone who comes here!!!
When we went to the floating market we got hit by another boat ( i was thinking more about my camera getting wet than going in the dirty water for some reason) however the other boat was worse off with the driver ending up in the water and a broken boat. "My boat is considerablly bigger than yows".
Also I ended up getting the tour by myself as they did not appear to be many british around. But i ended up getting to tour guides as one was on work experience learning to be a guids and the other can only be described as the grand master of guides as he knew fluent english and knew all the answers.
The popcorn factory was really interesting, and they made about 50,000 bars a day in what was a little shack really on the river side.
All the islands and families were so self efficient to was amazing and they used every bit of the land that they could and recycled everything. They had even built river defenses from the water plants, fish farms underneath the house and self made boats.
After a short bike ride around one of the island with the guide pointing out all the flowers and fruits (kinda reminded me of family holidays back in Wales), I had a private showing of a traditional dance and songs which was different and fun.
After about an hour of hammockage and food I went to the homestay family where the guide even stayed so he could act as a translator which was amazing. I helped make spring rolls and pumpkin soup (well i cut them up and rolled them) and then all the men ate in a different room and shared all the food and drank a lot of rice wine. In fact it was a little wierd as they was a dutch couple also there but they had said to me they were used to 5* hotels (big mistake) and they did not eat with me or the house owner.
Moving onto My Tho next for snake farm and more boat trips before heading onto Dalat for some trekking/mountain biking.
