Hi Everyone,
Have decided to do a bulk blog from Byron Bay and Surfers Paradise as we've got quite a lot of places to visit up the east coast, and don't want to constantly bombard you all with our updates/come personal diary! Since I last wrote on here, we've left New South Wales and entered Queensland...and I tell you something...it gets bloody hot the further up you go (god help us when we get to Cairns!)
Thursday 3rd Feb - We packed up our bits ready to leave our tent and head to Byron Bay, went for one last swim at Port Stephens lovely beach and then hung around Newcastle (the main town) for about 2 hours until we could get on the bus for our 10 hour journey up to Byron (wasn't too bad in the end as we were able to sleep most of it)
Friday 4th Feb - Checked into our hostel "Aquarius", which was 2 mins from the beach. We had some breakfast and booked ourselves straight onto the "Nimbin" tour, which is a hippy, pot smoking village, full of "deliverance"looking people! We did however have a great time on "Jim's Alternative Tours Bus" listening to his favourite hippy songs, hearing tales of his youth, stopping off at a crazy man's house for a jungle trek etc! Once we got back to our dorm, Danny and I checked out the local "goon" (cheap wine) with our new house mates and had a few in the hostel night club.
Saturday 5th Feb - We were having breakfast in Byron's town centre, when we heard a horn tooting and looked round to see our friends Kate & Ollie (the ones we met in Thailand) sat outside in their camper van - such a suprise as they were initially about a week ahead of us travelling wise. We had a good catch up over breakfast and jumped in the back of the van to visit "Brunkswick Heads"- boys did some fishing, whilst Kate & I topped up our tans nattering away. Stopped off at Woolworths for some bits (yes...Woolworths is like Tesco over here!) and finished the day with a BBQ on the beach.
Sunday 6th Feb - We visited Byron's Sunday market & the lighthouse - did some swimming in the sea with Kate & Ollie, which was lovely, until....I was STUNG BY A JELLYFISH! God the pain was awful - I felt like I'd jumped into fire - but with stingy nettles and wasps thrown in at the same time. I ran off to wash the blue ink off with water in the hope that it would stop stinging - (was stung on the back of my arm and leg - pictures to upload and show you all soon!) Anyway, Ollie ended up driving into the town to get some vinegar for it, which eventually (after about 40 minutes) took the pain away...really scared about going back in now so think I will stick to the cramped and bath like hostel pools (at least their safer!)
On the whole (the jellyfish drama aside) Danny and I thoroughly enjoyed Byron Bay, especially the buskers that lined the streets most evenings :)
Monday 7th Feb - We got the greyhound to Surfers Paradise, checked into our hostel "Sleepers Inn" where we've got a double room in a 2 bed apartment. Ollie & Kate pulled up in their Camper Van and we checked out "Movie World" (Danny and I love the theme parks!) Did a big shop at Woolies afterwards to try and save some money by cutting down on our eating out habbits! Kate & I decided to get some greens in and cook a roast (chicken was already cooked, so that saved us some time) However, never again shall I attempt such a mammoth meal without checking the oven first - was a bloody nightmare as the hobs and oven hardly heat at all!
Tuesday 8th Feb - We did Sea World, which was good, but a bit of an anticlimax with the animal shows unfortunately. The polar bear, was however brilliant as none of us had ever seen one so close before - standing on it's back legs it towered over us all!
Wednesday 9th Feb - To round our thrill seeking week off we went to "Wet N Wild", which was my favourite park out of the 3, we made some sarnies before so had a picnic out in the sunshine. Danny and I cooked Spag Bowl for tea and then tried again to catch some fish...no such luck though, although we did see 3 dolphins out in the distance!
Thursday 10th Feb - Today! We're just sat in the local internet cafe and have updated our greyhound to arrive in Brisbane tomorrow morning.Off to check out the beach properly now and are going to head to "Ripleys, Believe it or Not" tonight, which is meant to be one of those weird and wacky museum type things.
Will write another blog once we arrive in Noosa heads on Monday.
Chow for Now guys,
Lots of Love,
Meika & Danny
