From Christchurch we took the 4 hour bus ride to Lake Tekapo to see some of the spectacular views that New Zealand is famous for! As soon as we arrived we checked into the YHA which was right on the edge of the Lake and so had great views from the Communal lounge. This was one of the nicest hostels we've been in, although it was more than a little chilly in the evenings.
The weather on the day we arrived was brilliant - cold but a really clear sky and the sun was out. After discovering that this weather was not forcast for long we decided to make the most of it and take a scenic flight around Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier. We went up in a little 8 seater plane with 5 Japanese tourists (they provided a lot of entertainment) and had a spectacular tour through the mountain ranges and over the glaciers, the scenery was amazing loads of snow and ice. This was definately one of the highlights of our trip so far.
The next day, as I still had a cold we had a quiet day and walked along the side of the Lake and played a bit of crazy golf.
Our final day here and I was feeling much better so we decided to take on a bit of a walk up to the summit of Mount John (1031 metres abouve sea level). We took the long walk around the mountain and then up to the top. Was a bit of a hike and took us 5 hours to get back to the hostel. The views from the summit were once again stunning and luckily there was a cafe at the top to have a warm drink and a bit of a rest. After a tiring day we went to the chinese restaurant in the village for dinner and got an early night before our trip down to Dunedin the following day.
