We had a long bus journey down to Dunedin where we were only staying for 2 nights. We once again stayed at the YHA which was a really nice renovated hospital, about a 10 minute walk out of town. The town centre itself wasn't much, but the reason we had come down here was to go down onto the Otago Peninsula to see the wildlife. So we booked ourselves onto the Elm Wildlife Tour and went down to encounter some of the native wildlife. The first stop was Taiaroa Head to see the Royal Albatross Colony. It wasn't a very windy day on our trip and so the guide said we might not see any albatross flying abouve us, but we were lucky and had one fly right over our heads, only missing us by about 2 or 3 metres! They're just like massive seagulls (a wingspan of about 3 metres). Our next stop was further along the peninsula where we got to view New Zealand Fur Seals and their babies on the rocks. You actually got a really good view from above them and could have watched them playing in the pools of water for hours!
Our final stop was down on the beach where we walked within metres of massive Bull Sea Lions. One of which decided to chase our group along the sand! They were also great fun to watch as they kept fighting each other. Also on the beach we saw the Yellow-eyed Penguins come out of the water and make their way up the beach to their nests. It was a really good day out.
On our final day in Dunedin we walked to the steepest street in the world - Baldwin Street. Unsurprisingly it took quite a lot of effort to walk to the top and we watched one guy try to reverse his car up it, failing miserably and burning his clutch in the process!! Don't think his car will be starting up again soon!
Unfortunately we left the camera battery in the hostel at Lake Tekapo, so im afraid there will be no pictures on the website! The camera on our mobile will have to make do until we manage to get it back.
In the afternoon we caught the bus down to Invercargill to meet my Auntie.
