We've just spent 2 days in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. Hostel is amazing, all the staff are really friendly and helpful and its decorated in typical Sarawak style, lots of wood carvings and baskets. Donald, the owner has been great, he's told us where to go and how to get to all the places we wanted to go. Put it this way the Hilton is on the otherside of the road and we'd rather stay here.
Yesterday we had a quiet day as we haven't had one of those since we left home! Just had an explore of Kuching town, and walk down the riverfront which is right opposite our hostel. Donald advised us not to go to the Semmengoh Orangutan Reservation as it is fruit season in the jungle so the orangutans haven't been seen for 3 weeks there.
Instead, today we went to the Metang Wildlife Centre which is more of a zoo environment but you can get really close to the orangutans. The owners of our hostel know the people who run the Orangutan enclosure at the Wildlife Centre and so we got to go right inside the enclosure and see them face to face!!
It was an amazing experience as we met Doris a female orangutan who has been rescued and who loves people. We got to feed her bananas, oranges and apples. She pushed food through the cage bars and we borke it into pieces for her to eat. She taught Marc how to peel an orange because he gave it to her whole. She took it off him, demonstrated and then gave it back to him! We stayed with her for over an hour and you could really feel like she could understand you, they're very clever. They also had a male Aman who we couldn't get too close to or take any photos of, because he was very aggressive. He is blind and next month is going to be the first orangutan in the world to have a cataracts operation! He was massive and kept wrapping a blanket around his head.
