"i'm in Delhi....get me out of here!"
So our first night in Delhi was pretty uneventful, thankfully! Mind you we didn't arrive until 11pm so not enough time to get into mischief! The next day however was pretty horrendous. Delhi itself is very busy, dirty and smelly. There are cows roaming the streets and the amount of litter everywhere is pretty disgusting. Apparently Delhi is hosting the Commonwealth games in a few weeks, although the building work is still being done so not sure whats going to happen there. In the space of 1 day we got scammed, told our train tickets were invalid, sent on a wild goose chase around the city, just about survived the crazy driving and then got caught up in a massive thunderstorm! By the end of the first morning we pretty much knew that we could trust no one and that we wanted to leave Delhi as soon as possible.
By the afternoon we were all just fed up of being hassled, lied to and expected to give tips for everything and anything. Finally our saviour came when we found an official tourist office where they told us we could have our own personal driver called Deepak, an air conditioned car for an 18 day tour of Rajasthan, including nice hotels along the way....YES PLEASE!! So instead of spending 3 days in Delhi as originally planned we left the next day!
3rd September - We travelled (in our nice air conditioned car) to Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. We went straight to the hotel which was nicely positioned between a costa coffee and pizza hut! Now i love pizza but even i resisted going to pizza hut, although i did have to try out the costa coffee!! The next morning, after a 5 30am start, we went to see the sunrise over the Taj Mahal, by the time we were allowed in we missed the sunrise but the Taj Mahal was absolutely stunning. It really is an amazing thing to see and the fact that it wasn't too crowded at that time of the morning meant we could really enjoy the spectacular scenery.
4th September - We travelled to Jaipur, also known as the Pink city, because the buildings that face onto the main road are all pink. On the way to Jaipur, we stopped to look around a Hindu temple. A lovely Indian lady showed us around the temple. We were intrigued to find out why everyone was heading upstairs.....when we got there we found out that we had to walk in a line, every time we stood on a flower we had to chant "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare"......108 times no less!!!! I know it off by heart now!
Once we reached Jaipur, we visited the City Palace which was not the most interesting place to be honest. The palace itself is occupied by the Royal family so we only got to look around museum, which was interesting in parts.
Amber Fort on the other hand was pretty cool. It rests on top of a hill and has pretty amazing views. As we stopped to take a photo from the bottom of the hill, minding our own business, 2 guys sat down in front of us and started playing a flute. It took us a little while to notice the snakes rearing their ugly heads up out of the basket! As soon as we saw one of them move we literally dived into the back of the car. Nicola went first, and me and Jess bundled on top. Hannah on the other hand couldn't understand what all the fuss was about and very calmly and ladylike got into the car!
6th September - Still in Jaipur, we visited Hawa Mahal and Nahargarh fort which had awesome views over Jaipur. We had our photo taken quite a few times today with various Indian families. Some people do ask us first but most of the time they try and take a sneeky photo of us but not very subtly!
So far the food has been amazing. We have experienced eating food off the street stalls, which was delicious but required a dose of antibiotics afterwards! Its too good not to eat though, so i haven't been put off just yet!!
8th and 9th September - We made it to Pushkar, which is a nice city on the lake. This is the first place that i have really liked in India so far. We can walk down the street and through the markets without being hassled. Everyone here seems really friendly compared to other parts we've been to.
This morning we got up before sunrise and decided that it was a good idea to walk ( more like trek) up a mountain to Savitri temple........3 hours later we got back!! The view over Pushkar was amazing but the temple really wasn't worth visiting to be honest but the exercise was good. After burning all those calories, we then ate two breakfasts at the hotel! Oink Oink!! Going to a yoga class this evening...should be interesting!
Hope this wasn't too boring! I'l try and update again soon
