Well after 14,500 km we have made it to the east coast (some might suggest we took the long way about getting here!)
Today was a big day of driving again - about 10 hours, but we made it to Airlie Beach (Cannonvale) just before dark to the welcoming hugs and kisses of Nanny and Pop (aka, Mum and Dad/Jen and Mick). It was lovely to catch up with them and share some of our adventure stories and hear all the news from at home - thanks for the postcards family!!
Notable things on the drive
- The coal mining areas south east of Mackay. Massive mines right next to the road. The boys enjoyed looking at all the machinery. There were also long conveyor belts to take the coal from the mines and huge freight trains transporting the coal. One train had approx 100 carriages and we saw three of these returning the mining area within about half an hour (made us wonder - how much coal is coming out of the ground here!!)
- The sugar cane fields. Heaps of them. Some cane taller than the car, others just recently planted. To go with this we saw the sugar mill in Nebo.
