I think this was deffinatley one of my favourite trips so far. We started with a hike in the Grampians National Park and went to see McKenzie Falls, lots of steps! There was lots of driving on the 1st day but we stayed in a really nice place called Halls Gap at the Brambuk backpackers hostel, it had a really cosy feel to it with an open fire in the lounge.
The next day we did another hike to the pinnacle. I must admit when i first got here and started doing walking i was always at the back of the group but now im at the front!! We then went to a cultural centre which was really good but slightly disturbing at the same time. We learned there was a massacre of aboriginal people throughout Victoria. It started with a white man living in Halls Gap who had a shep farm and he realised that aboriginal people were taking some of his sheep. He went to the governement to see what he could do and he was granted a licence to shoot the aboriginal people. This was allowed because according to the law, the aboriginal people were not classed as people but as flora and fauna and could therefor be killed. It wasnt untill about 1971 that it was made illigal. Captain Cook did not discover Australis by the way, he was the first person to claim the land. When claiming a land, it must be uninhabbited land. Australia was not uninhabbited, the aboriginal people have been here for thousand of years compared to the white man who has only been here for about 200 years. Aparently when Cook claimed Australia for the British Empire, he knew that the land was inhabbited by aboriginals but told the Brittish Governement and the Queen that it was uninhabbited so they could claim it. It is because of this that the aboriginal people became to been seen as flora and fauna rather that people.
Anyway, we also went to the Bay of Martys, London Bridge and Loch Ard Gorge. These are all places along the coast close to the 12 Apostlesl. The Bay of Martys was a place where aboriginals people were pushed to their deaths from the cliff tops in to the sea. Loch Ard Gorge is the bay where a ship wreck happened, it has a really nice beach. The 12 Apostles were amazing! Just as i had seen in the photos. The have been formed by errosion from the weather and sea which has left large parts of the cliffs in the water. The great ocean road has 4 sections to it, it has farm land, sandstone stack coast, rainforrest and the surf coast. I did a short helicopter ride over the 12 Apostles which was excellent! I dont know why they call it the 12 Apostles because there are only 8!
The photos say it all really.
