Milene in Africa
So yes I have made it back from the Safari trip at the weekend. It took us a while to get there. One part of the road was so bad that it took us 1 hour to drive 50km. Just crazy! So we entered Tsavo East National Park around 11 a.m. It was great, the top of our van lifted quite high up so that we could spot the animals in their wild habitat. It is a much different experience from visiting a zoo, on a safari you have to work hard, driving around and looking for animals. We saw lots of elephants, zebras, giraffs (can't remember how to spell the plural), ostriches, antelopes ( at least 5 different types), birds, hippos and a couple of lions having a nap under a tree in the distance. After that we had lunch at Voi Lodge, a beautiful place overlooking a waterhole filled with elephants. We drove to Tsavo West, about 1 hour away. Tsavo means 'slaughter' in the local native language and it was in this area, during the construction of the Kenyan National Railway that two lions killed over 200 men in less then 4 months (watch the film The Ghost and The Drakness for the whole story). So yes I was very scared. Inside this park there is an area reserved for the rhinos, but they were very shy and we didn't see any. It was late afternoon when we headed off to our hotel. Now this is the scary bit: the hotel is INSIDE the park, without any fences around it or eletricity, the only protection were the Masai warriors and their long woodden sticks. I literally shat myself all night. I could not sleep at all. All the noises from the outside... and our cabin had no proper walls or windows, just a thick material, like in a tent between us and the local wildlife. The generator went off at 11 o'clock and I had to keep going to the toilet using a candle for light. Some crazy stuff! But morning came, eventually, and we left for an early game drive where we spotted lots of buffalos, hippos and Giraffs. It was a good day, but i was glad to be back home... I believe that I'm not really the outdoor type of person...ahahahah. But I hope you are all well. I'll be going to Lamu on Wednesday bacause our school has exams so we cannot teach. Lamu is an old town where time has stopped...without any lions : )
