WABASSO CAMPGROUND: After waking, at 6am,we made another early start.Dave toasting bagels over our little campfire and brewing the billy! Camp pack up was the usual back of the car job and we were off to see the falls.
ATHABASCA FALLS at sunrise Wow!...and for once the crowd hadn't arrived yet. Here the pounding power of the water sent tons of spray into the air catching the rays of the rising sun and creating a shimmering rainbow that hovered over this spectular natural creation
Today's drive took us south down the ICEFIELDS HIGHWAY to Lake Louise and lake Moraine.
This road trip is stunning visually. Impossible to describe .... Just look at the photos. Almost glacier and craggie ranged out, we stopped at Lake Peyto. The color of this glaciel ice melt is unbelievable aqua blue ... Not quite like anything that I've seen before.
I really enjoyed the tundra here and taking millions of photos of field flowers... In fact I must have looked like a botanist as I was approached by a gentleman talking excitedly in plant language who had a large flower book tucked under his arm...not sure what he was sharing with me ( something about the elusive single flowered Queens Cup) but I smiled and nodded lots.
LAKE LOUISE was a nightmare of hustle and bustle, nowhere to park , and representatives from every town on earth....Canada's Noah's Ark! We left!
14 Kama down the road we came on the sister lake MORAINE. It was a beautiful teal color. The lake is set in the valley of ten peaks. The lake appears to be guarded by the 10 towering glacier covered peaks. It was rugged secluded and had an old fashioned lodge the retired into the background.
Lightning flashed and thunder roared as our spell of usually hot weather threatened to break. Where could we stay? Enquiries at the lodge revealed a vacant cabin with fireplace and balcony overlooking THAT view.
The room layout was amazing. The complimentary wine better. A shower, a soaking tub, soft towels clean sheets. We ran around like excited kids, absolutely delighted as the thunderstorm raged outside.... Romance was in the air!
By night fall we had turned the place into a josh house. A week's washing hung from every bear lamp and undies from moose statues. With the open fire cranked and the central heating turned up we went out for our fine dining experience and the cosy library's WiFi so we could catch up with our gang back home in Aus.
