Hey folks, getting out of the Oz welcomes now as this is the last instalment from Oz! We are currently in Perth at the moment and will be here relaxing for the next 3 days before we head off for the next leg of our journey, Hong Kong.
You may not think so but we thought we needed a rest before the next leg as we have managed to drive around 6,500klms in the last 4 weeks which is some going....you really forget how big this place really is! Thats like driving the length of Britain around 8 times, glad we will not be driving for the next 6 weeks!!
And before we get into another story we just have to mention the amount of roadkill....outrageous......we have never seen as many dead kangaroos, sheep, goats and even a few cows!!! You understand now why they say not to drive at night and why you should keep well out the way of the road trains (they just blast through anything in their path!).
Now for the last instalment..............
Left Margaret River for..yes you guessed it another long drive to The Pinnacles which are in Cervantes on the West coast. We got there ont he right day as it was the first full moon so contrary to the advice above we decided to head off for the sunset!
The Pinnalces are really eerie limestone pillars that get up to 4m tall and pop up out of the ground literally in the middle of nowhere. You can drive around the site then park up and have a walk around them. Tried to get Mr Fleming to have a Billy Connelly moment and strip off to dance through the Pinnacles but he wasnt for it....too many onlookers!!!! We stayed there until sunset and watched the formations change as it did then headed back with only the light of the full moon to help us spot for kangaroos!
Another long drive took us to Monkey Mia, we had a complete nightmare trying to get accommodation as we completely forgot it was the Easter holidays for the kids here as well. Managed to blag ourselves 4 nights as the most stunning place.
Spent most of our time in Monkey Mia lazing on the beach which was right on our doorstep and seeing the wild dolphins that came in every morning for a feed. The dolphins are completely wild and are only fed a small amount int he morning but they are clever enough to know that it saves them a wee bit of time and energy catching the fish on their own in the morning!!!
Also went to a Marine Park where we saw some of the species of life that live in the water of Monkey Mia and Shark Bay....and yes its called shark bay because they have many kinds of sharks (managed to stay well clear of the water here!!!). Saw Nemo again, some crazy looking stonefish which are uggly as can be, sea snakes, snapper and of course the sharks...the biggest of which was the vicious Tiger Shark...known to have a wee bite out of a human now and again!!!!
On our way to Coral Bay we stopped off at some blowholes just north of Carnarvon. They are pretty cool, as the sea crashes in it forces a powerful jet of water throught he rocks..sometimes to a height of 20m...although we didnt see any that high. This area can be extremely dangerous with the huge waves, we found out that the day after we were there a young asian man lost his life there, got a little too close to the edge.
Coral Bay was yet another beautiful bay with an amazig beach, crystal clear waters and a reef that you could basically walk out to snorkel on. As you will have all guessed by now we spent most of our time here on the beach doing basically ntohing at all!
Decided to do snorkelling one day as Amanda felt a little bit adventurous...turns out she was not quite as adventurous as she was on the barrier reef as only managed to get over the reef a couple of times! Think it was a safety in numbers thing the last time...I only had a 1 in 20 chance of being eaten by a shark...this time it was me or the hubby!!!!
To heighten the fear we managed to swim right over the top of a sting ray which was relaxing in the sand below us....you should have seent he size of the barb...wasnt taking any chances after poor Steve Irwin! However the coral and the fish here were actually awesome, amazing colours and a huge amount of fish with dazzling colours all around you. Unfortunately we didnt get to see a turtle..think you need to be much further out for them.
Finally it was time for our 2 day marathon drive back to Perth, covered around 1300klms in 2 days and around 13 hours of driving all in......so you can understand now why we want to spend the next 3 days relaxing in Perth. If anything good happens we will update you, however since we have no pennies we dont think that will be the case!!! Living on beans and cheap super noodles...heaven!
We are off to Hong Kong on Friday and then to our final destination, Vietnam on Sunday. Dont know how often we will be able to get decent internet access to update the website so forgive us if it isnt updated again until we return home.....on Friday 25th May, just incase anyone has forgot!
