Hello everyone once again!
Our time in New Zealand is almost over now it is our last night on the Sourh Island as tomorrow morning we catch our ferry back to the North Island.Since Charles' last blog we have been to a hell of amazing places, met a hell of a lot of amazing people and done just about everything, so its going to be impossible to fit them all in one blog but... oh well here goes nothing!
After we had the night out with the fellow Brighouse boys we left for the ferry after a small panic because our campervan wouldn't start due to a flat battery after playing music all night! We then arrived on the South Island and drove in a rush down to Christchurch as we had to return our beloved Aquarius (a name already given to our campervan). We then spent a couple of days in Christchurch in a hostel called Charlie Bs which turned out to be full of absolute weirdos and geeks. For example one of them had spent his day watching people play chess and went to a sci-fi conference. Overall Christchurch was slightly disappointing. We had one final night out in Christchurch as the kings of leon were playing at the local arena, this was the third time we had been in the same city as the band we both love and had to miss out on going because of funds so we decided to have a night out to cheer ourselves up! We then met Nicole, Sasha and Rebecca, three students from Dunedin who were there for the gig who offered us a lift down to Dunedin the next day so as we do whenever things are free we accepted the offer. We would then later that night be cooked our first roast dinner in 5 months!
We stayed in Dunedin for a week spending the majority of our time relaxing and watching DVDs (so much so that i am now a member of the local video rental store)! We did occasionally leave the hostel, once to the brewery with our favourite German Flo or as we liked to call him Flo Rider and another time stupidly me and Charles ended up swimming for 2 minutes in the sea at St. Claires until frostbite kicked in. Appart from that the only time we ventured out from the hostel was for Dunedin's nightlife with our German contingency which made for a few good nights out. It was my birthday while we were in Dunedin (thanks Charles' Mum for the birthday message!), my birthday unluckily fell on a Monday so we decided to celebrate on the Saturday, as it turned out Charles sounded like he celebrated a bit too hard as he shredded his jeans climbing over a wall, was sighted running back the hostel with his shirt off and he recalls been puched in the face by a girl (which is now my favourite bithday present of all time) he then calapsed on the hostel sofa in the reception for the night. We then spent my actual birthday watching more DVDs. We learnt a great technique to save money during our time in Dunedin thanks to Flo... Hitchiking.
Since then we have travelled everywhere by hitchiking, which has saved us bags of money and introduced us to some very 'interesting' people. We have had a mixture of Australian creeps, American hippies, misrable Germans, 60 year old stalker, and just about everything inbetween! We went from Dunedin to Queenstown for a couple of days, we spent most of it playing frisbee golf and the rest of our time wishing we could afford some of the activities. We then hitched down to Milford Sound stoping at Te Anau for enough time for Charles to annoy the locals. Milford Sound was amazingly beautiful as the pictures which will be uploaded soon will show! We then made our way back to Queenstown where we gave into our temptations and ate a fergburger (a legend within the backpackers circuit) and went river boarding, which was one of the highlights of the trip so far.
We then headed up the west coast to Franz Joseph Glacier where we went for a trek to the Glacier and got completely soaked as it was pissing it down all day. Then we headed up the west coast and then back across the Christchurch before heading up to Kaikoura where we attempted the pub quiz in a two man team thinking that the best possible outcome was slight public humiliation, as it turned out Charles was humiliated for completely different reasons to what we had imagined. We scored poorly throughout the quiz until the sports round which we nailed and then we were suddenly up to second place!! Then after a few unconventional bonus rounds which would be unappropriate to mention on this website we managed to finish second and win one shaker (an alcoholic mixture for shots), a free tshirt and for finishing second a 25 dollar bar tab! The tshirt came at a cost though, Charles pride. Whoever wrote the most embarressing story on their answer sheet won. We though we may as well make one up, however this backfired when we made up a horrific story which is unapropriate for this website. The quiz master then unexpectedly read them all out and pointed to the person. Charles was the only made up one and ended up with the whole pub pointing and laughing!
We then made our way up the coast to Nelson. We then hired a car in Nelson for two days as we are running out of time to get back to Auckland and we wanted to visit Abel Tasman National Park. So we drove to Abel Tasmin slept in the car then spent this morning playing frisbee on the beach and having a swim... fun fun fun! And the this afternoon we have driven back to Picton for tomorrows ferry to Wellington. So thats almost everything that we've been up to in the last month or so!
Hope all is well back home
Love Max
