I left Sydney for Bryon bay at 10pm. The coach journey wasn't too bad, except for the fact that i was sitting next to an obese old man who reaked of cigars and wouldnt stop talking about the war! However, when he stopped talking at roughly 2am i managed to get some sleep and i arrived in Byron Bay the following morning at 8am. I booked myself into a nice hostel called "Aquarius", a very cool place with all the rooms encompassing a circular, central area. This served as a bar and everynight they played really good music untill late. During my first day there i went to check out the town and then chilled on the beach in the afternoon where I managed to get very burnt on my face despite the fact i was wearing factor 30 suncream! In the evening i chilled out at the hostel and met a few people from my room. I particularly got on with these two girls called Alice and Gemma who were from Cornwall and also a chap called Rony from Germany.
The following morning i woke up late, and decided to stay out the sun because my face now looked so red someone had hit me in the face with a tomato! In the evening i went to a bar and watched the Super 14, whilst chatting to some Australian guy explaining how Australian rugby is inferior to English! As i was heading back at about 12 (thinking i should probably go to bed as i had to be up at about 630) i ran into my room mates who said that i should come out with them. Naturally being a guy who can never refuse a beer i obliged. After a few bars, clubs and a really good night out we got back at about 5.30.
The following morning after 1 hours sleep i got up, packed and drowsily made my way to the bus station with a slight feeling of dread as it was a 22 hour bus journey to my next stop, Airlie Beach. Despite my minimal amount of sleep i decided to man up stay awake untill the following evening. The daytime hourney was not too bad, the road we took made its way both along the coastline as well as the borders of the outback, thus giving good views of both coast as well as parts of the dusty outback. As darkness fell though i couldn't help feel bummed out because my i-pod had run out, it was too dark to read and i had 10 hours to go! Eventually it was over, i was in Airlie Beach and had arranged to meet back up with Jack that afternoon.
We accidently ran into each other later that day outside our hostel after i had spent a large part of the morning sleeping in the park. Jack had just come back from a sailing tour and as part of his tour he was taught to play the didgeridoo. I managed to pretend i was part of this tour when we got there and blagged myself a free lesson. I was actually surprisingly easyto grasp, but very challenging to master, as there is a specific way of regulating your breathing so you breathe in through your nose and compress your cheeks at the exact same time. In the evening we got on with our neighbours really well so we all had a few drinks on the balcony before Jack and I went out to the bars.
The next day was my birthday, so we spent a lot of the day buying drinks and pizza. In the evening all out Canadian room mates got together and we all had a massive piss up which was really fun. After getting told off for having girls in our room and not drinking in moderation by the YHA manager we went downstairs and continued in the kitchen. After playing Ring of Fire, and getting suitably tanked up we all went out. Being St Patricks Day, there were lots of people (women) out and I ended up talking to a very very hot English girl for about 45 minutes, it was then she mentioned she had a boyfriend who was actually sitting on the otherside of the table and looking very pissed off that i was taking such an interest in his girlfriend! After being rejected from another pub because Jack was too pissed (lightweight) i went for a piss against a building. I was just finishing off when a bright spotlight shone on me and i turned around to discover it was a police car! A cop jumped out and ran over and grabbed me and said i had to pay $200 for urinating in public, i nervously explained i didn't have that kind of money so he gave me an evil look and said, "drop and give me twenty then!!!" After drunkingly doing my pushups i walked away grinning as the cop had turned out to be a bit of a joker!
The next day we spent chilling out by the pool as i nursed a hangover that could slay a walrus. The weather then turned and we ended up chilling on the covered balcony. The following day was a similar routine to the previous and in the evening we caught the night bus to our final destination of the east coast, Cairns.
