After two nights of staying in Melbourne, I know nothing of my lower bunk sharer other than he sounds like a Dyson at night. I have never before felt such exasperation towards an unknown man. I am once again employing the trick of stuffing my earphones in and drowning out the incessant snoring with quite loud soothing music. Happy bloody Christmas...
So I arrived in Melbourne surprisingly late in the afternoon having been on Perth time in the morning. Christmas Eve Eve was spent enjoying the entertainment in the vast hostel bar that was populated with several England cricket fans. Actually very difficult to get a conversation going with drunken groups in a loud room. Still, the parrot-wearing, guitar playing fusion musician/comedian was great value for the night.
At times, I find myself grinning stupidly at how lucky I am to be travelling and experiencing all these new things that are so different to home. For example, my Christmas Eve morning was spent wandering through blazing sunshine on the beach of St Kilda in shorts and T-shirt, eating gelato ice cream and relaxing without a care in the world. Smug grins are rife in my life at the moment...
In the afternoon I wandered through the parks and old shopping malls, ending up in Fitzroy Gardens which is beautifully tucked away next to modern skyscrapers and parliament buildings. Slightly worried about cooking myself in the Federation Square sun, but hey, there is free wireless, which is like travellers' catnip.
The evening started with me crowbarring my way into as many group conversations as possible to get into a social group for Christmas Eve. I ended up getting a spare ticket for Boxing Day at the MCG for 70 dollars and I joined those lot for a couple of drinks before we headed to Barmy Army HQ for another. I only stayed for one as it was a bit of a cattle market and I prefer not to crowd surf to get my drinks...
...and so we end here. My last night in the hostel before I spend Christmas with a big family, only one of whom I actually know. This is what I travel for!
