Ok, so I have a confession to make. This blog and the next few blog entries are being written almost a month after they actually happened. What can I say? I've been having too much fun to interrupt it by writing about how much fun I was having. So, with that out of the way, I'm going to cast my mind back to the misty depths of the great ocean road...
Amy and I kicked off our Great Ocean Road adventure by visiting Lorne for a breakfast with a view. A pretty good view at that: beautiful long beach with surfers and sunshine. And cars. Nice cars.
The Great Ocean Road is an amazing feat of engineering and hard work and my god is it beautiful. Every corner reveals more gorgeous ocean and stunning views along the shore. By the time we got to the Apostles, I was reaching overload. Then the Apostles blew me away. We even had our own national park guide, Vinny, to answer questions and hang around awkwardly at the end.
A swift drive home meant that Amy could start her shift at the local while I was left the enjoy Chivas Regal, cricket and dinner with Sue and Linton, Amy's parents. I then went with Lint to the pub for a drink or three and stayed on until Amy finished. During that time I played pool with the locals and got invited by a bar owner and a local radio DJ (two girls who were a bit too good at pool) to a disco in a nearby town. One expensive drink, dancing and some random threw up on the dance floor. The usual... I actually didn't recognise most of the music but the Aussie folks obviously did.
It became apparent that I must have been a bit drunk when I woke up late, with a headache, the next day. Had enough time to watch England retain the ashes in style, then to visit Split Point lighthouse, otherwise known as the lighthouse from Round The Twist. Fame. Get in. A nice walk on the beach, then we were off to see some kangaroos at a golf course. I nearly got mistaken for one when I emerged from the trees after a leak. Anyway...
I took the train back to Melbourne after saying goodbye to Amy, and there I met up with Christa! We did some world class citywide faffing, which included gelato and eventually fish and chips in the setting sun at St Kilda, where there is a scale model of the solar system on the promenade. I enjoyed that day completely. Thanks to Amy and Christa for ferrying me around, and Christa for buying me all the food that evening!
