Matthew & Amy On Tour
Hey Everyone
We are currently in Austrailia now working our way up the west coast but the following is the singapore entry. We have been so busy lately and as the internet access is limited on the west coast, only now we have managed to put the entry in !!
We were in singapore for three nights and we had a great few days there. On first impressions, the city is so clean and organised. There is such a contrast when you compare singapore to other asian cities. Singaporians pride themselves on their cleanliness and developed city, and there was hardly any poor areas withtin the city. The city had an impressive skyline and there were lots of nice parks to go to and relax in.
In the three days we were there, we cramed alot in. We were staying in a hotel in Little India so there was alot of culture where we were situated. We were very central to the main shopping area so in the three days, we walked to every destination thinkable. However In comparison to Kuala Lumper, we thought singapore lacked any real tourist attractions.
On the first night there we wached a lazer show at the largest fountain in the world. It was quite spectactular as the lights and lazers were very impressive. The fountain (also known as the fountain of wealth) was situated in a shopping mall that had a food court. This meant that we ate our dinner watching the show which was wicked. It was awesome, as everyone would write in messages to a machine and then in the show they would incorporate the messages into the lazers. We were going to write a message but in the end we juat watched them instead !!
The following day we went shopping and oh my god, the shops were fantasitc. The shopping malls were far better then malaysia and bancock (not that i thought that was possible) and there were tonnes of them. We must have seen about 30 huge shopping malls and that was only half of them. Matt bought his underwater casing for his camera which means that we can take his camera down on dives up to 40 meteres which is wicked. He had a good deal so he was a happy bunny for the rest of the trip in singapore. Orchard street which is where the shopping malls were was mindblowing. We walked for hours in the malls and in the street and still did not complete the whole street. If you have money to spare and you love to shop, then singapore is the place to go. I bought a couple of itemns of clothing but as we are travellers we could not captilaise on how amazing the shopping was.
The second day we went down to the harbour which was very impressive and saw the lion statue which represents the country of singapore. We then walked around all of the old english buildings and monuments and saw lots of catherdrals and cricket piches. These were built in the time when britain used to own singapore. It Was an interesting tour as you find out the history of when Britain used to rule Singapore and how it has evolved to be its own country.
What was impressive in singapore was the Chinatown. It was really colourful and had lots of cool, interestiong temples and buildings. It for me has been the best chinatown i have seen so far. Little india was also very colourful and busy. Another geat thing about singapore was the food, it was amazing. Every shopping mall had a food court where you could eat any type of food you wanted at a cheap price. We took advantage of these malls and eat there every day. Singapore was very expensive when compared to the rest of asia, so you could spend money so easily at a worrying rate.
On the whole, we loved singapore, it was very clean and new, with great shopping malls and some intersesting history. The only downfall was the humidity. It was stupidly hot and humid there. Matt nearly passed out a couple of times so we often ran into shops to cool down. I have never experienced heat like it, it was very stuffy and uncomfortable. Also as there was forest fires in indonsia at the time we were in singapore, the city was very hazy. The haze completely blocked out the sun so the humidity was even worse than normal.
We left singapore in the evening on the 18th and headed to perth in West Austrailia.
We had a great time in Asia overall, we saw some amazing cities and islands.
I will update the journal very soon to let you know how amazing west austrailia has been. We have bought a van called snoopy and have kitted it out so we can sleep and live in it. Its a wicked van, its a toyota Hiace and its a 94 model, so its very reliable. We are having a great time in Austrailia as we have seen some amazing sights.
Well i hope all of you back home are having a great time and that your all excited for the run up to christmas. Miss you all, make sure you keep in touch.
Take care and take it easy
Lots of love
