Matthew & Amy On Tour
Hey EveryoneWell we are finally out of Thailand, we were there for about 4 weeks in total, and it was an amazing 4 weeks. Our next stop was to Malaysia, which is famous for its Petronas towers (the largest building in the world, has 88 floors and has a glass bridge that links the two towers together. This is where the visiters go and observe the malaysia skyline). To get to malaysia, we picked the cheapest option and went for the 20 hour bus ride. we would have loved to fly but as we are travellers we had to save the pennies. We caught the bus from Krabi at 11 am in the morning and we were driven to Hat Yai which is at the bottom of thailand. This is where all the terroist attacks occur, and loads of bombs had gone off in the previous weeks, so we were a bit apprehensive about going there. What we did not know was, was that they made us wait for 4 hours in hat yai for the connecting night bus to malaysia. We were not impressed about this, as we had no money as we were leaving thailand, and as Hat yai is not a touristy place, there was not much to do. In the end, we played cards for 3 hours in the travel agency in which we were dropped off in. The people there must have thought we were crazy !! From Hat yai we caught a night bus to malaysia. We were due to get there 6am the following morning. The bus journey was suprisingly fine, alot better than expected as the seats were really big and comfy and there was alot of space to move your legs in.However we arrived into Kulala Lumper at 3am, which was very early to what was expected and so we had alot of time to kill. We picked the night journey to save paying accomodation for the night, so we did not want to pay for a room at 3am. In the end we went to an all night internet cafe and went on the net for four hours until checkin. We had three days in Kuala Lumper so we wanted to make the most of it. It was a big city and there was plenty to do. First impressions were that it was alot more developed than Thailand (Bangkok) and was not as smelly. There were not as many poor parts as thailand, so that was a bonus, as bangkok upset us with all the poverty. The Golden Traingle which was the centre of Malaysia was shopping heaven. There were loads of massive shopping malls that sold everything under the sun at cheap and cost effective prices. There were loads of awesome shops there (many of them were out of our league like Gucci, chanel.......etc) but we found some wicked Billabong and Roxy stores. There was even a topshop and Debenhams !!! We stayed in a hostel that was quite central to the Golden triangle so we went there most days to have a walk around and eat. Another attaraction was Chinatown, as it was really pretty and colourful and there was a massive market there that sold everything very cheaply (mostly knock off gear thou). On the second day we visited Petronas towers and it did not disspoint. The towers were absolutely breathtaking, nothing like we have ever seen before. Before this jouney, Canary Wharf in London was the bgigest building that i had seen, so when we saw the towers, we were both in awe. They are beautifully built (which matt appreciated) and the archeticure of the building is brilliant. They are quite symbolic of the muslim religion, and the edges of the towers represent religion plus earth, sky, water and air. The towers are 470 meters high and consisit of a orchestra musical hall, shopping plaza, museum and science centre. However they are mostly offices which is why we could not have access to the highest part of the building. We went up to the glass bridge which was the observation part of the towers, and the sight from the bridge was wicked. Even at bridge height (which was on the 41st floor), you were higher than the rest of the malaysia skyline. The only downfall was that in our time in malaysia, it was very misty and hazy. It was absolutley boiling, but there was no sun. We thought this was unusual, and we later found out that there had been forest fires in Indonisia and that was causing all of the mist in the surrounding countries. Therefore visibility was quite low so we could not take advantage of all the views malaysia had to offer. We then went to the KL tower which is an observation tower in malaysia (like the BT tower in the UK). This was about 350 meters high so it was still very high and impressive. We both went up to the observaion deck which was about 200 meters high so we got to see the malaysian skyline again. Howvere, as the visibilty was low, we could not see all of the city. Nonetheless it was still worth going up and fingers crossed the photos will not be too bad.On the third day we went and saw some other cultural sights such as the tallest flag pole in the world, standing at 100 meters high. This was in Maldeka square which had alot of British type buildings in as Britain used to own malaysia not so long ago. Other places that we visited was central market which was an indoor market that only sold art and crafts and we visited Little India. Little India was quite an experience as we went there as it was getting dark, and as the indians were fasting they were all out in the streets waiting to eat. During fasting, they can not eat during the day so they were all out with the food in front of them waiting for the night to draw in. Therfore as we were walking through the streets it was utter craziness. They must have been starving, dont know how they do it myself. I have to eat every 3 hours to supress my hunger so i take my hat off to them.Malaysia is made up of three different types of peple, the malay, the chinese and the indians. Therefore the muslim religion was featured heavily in the city. We were staying near china town and little india so most of the women were covered up. However on one of the days, i wore a strapy top, as it was so humid and warm. Well i tell you i have never been stared at so much. All of the men that walked past me were transfixed on my chest, it was like they had never seen skin before. I understand if they just looked and then looked away, but the fact that they stared for about 5 seconds on my breasts was starting to get on our nerves. After the 10th man to stare at me, we were both ready to go crazy, as we were very angry!! It was very degrading and for the rest of the days we were there i covered up as much as possible. One of the downfalls about malaysia was the food. We loved food in thailand as it was simple but very tasty. However in malaysia we did not know what alot of the food was and it did not look very appealing. However on the whole, we loved it there. The sights were amazing and there was so much to do there, that it was impossible to get bored. Over the 3 days we were there, we both walked about 10 miles each, so it was a very tiring couple of days. We did not use the public transport once, to save costs, so by the end of the few days our legs and feet were in agony !! Things started to get more expensive in malaysia than thailand so that was a b*****, but we did expect that. Our next stop is singapore so we left malaysia in the morning to go to Sinapore. We are in Perth now in Austrailia and will give the update on Singapore soon.Hope that you are all well and are live and kicking !!Take care and take it easy. Look forward to hearing from you all soon !!All our love, Amy and Matt x x x x x x x x x
