Hello,
We are nearly done in New Zealand now - 2 more nights then its off to Oz! Its going very fast now!
The south island has been really cool and probably my favourite part of the whole trip so far. We got the ferry over from Wellington and drove up to the Abel Tasman National park which was so peacful and amazing scenery. We parked up there for the night and had a very peacful sleep - it was so dark outside but there were thousands of stars in the sky which were ace! I attempted to do the Abel Tasman walk but realised before i went that it is a 51k, 3 day walk so i just did about an hour of it - still really nice though!
From here we drove onto Franz Josef which was also amazing. We stayed here for the night in the campsite and we were surrounded by all the massive mountains. Me and Mark went on a walk which was stupidly steep! Or I am just very unfit!?
The next day we went trekking on a Glacier which was one of the best things i've done so far! We did the Fox Glacier. To get to the Glacier we had to walk up a mountain - and walk right on the edge of a 100 metre drop grabbing onto a chain to stop you from falling.. wasnt too sure about that but we all made it through! Once we were there it was great though - The Glacier was massive - there was a pathway carved into the ice for us to walk on but it was still quite hard work - we had spikes on our shoes and big sticks so we managed not to fall over! It definately felt like we were in LOTR walking over the mountains. I was Gandalf! Carol was 1 of the Hobbits..
Next we went down to Wanaka which is a really cool little town on the lakefront. There wasnt that much there to do but it had a really good vibe about it. Me and mark went to the best cinema in the world to see 'The Divine Bell and the butterfly'. The cinema was just full of different sofas and comfy armchairs and there was an interval halfway through where you got homemade hot cookies and drinks. I loved it. I want to own a cinema like it now.. Maybe when i get back.
The next day me and Liz went skiing which was so much fun - i've never done it before and obviously wasnt sensible by having lessons or anything and just went straight onto the slopes. The first half an hour i hated it as i couldnt stand up - we went onto 1 of the lifts that pulls you up and i went flat on face first of all followed by getting off the lift too soon and going back down the hill backwards. After that though i got better and was soon zooming down the slopes. Liz gave me a lesson of how to stop and in the process stared going backwards and ended flat on her back.. was very funny! One mistake that we made was deciding to go down an intermediate slope - bad idea!! I ended up on mr arse going all the way down then half way down having a paddy as i couldnt stand up - all these stupid kids were flying past me. So we went back to the easier slopes and all was good in the world again!
Next was Milford Sound which is a massive fjord in the middle of nowhere! We got the bus there which took 5 hours stopping off at some beautiful places on the way including the mirror lakes which relflected the mountains brilliantly! We went on a boat trip right into the fjord and saw seals and went into a waterfall - all was very peaceful!
Queenstown was also a really nice place - the adventure capital of the world apparently - shame we had ran out of money by this point! We still had a great time though going on walks and trying the famous Fergburger (big meaty great burger!). We also got the famous Gondola cable cars up the mountain which was high.. and steep! When we got to the top though the views were ace! We also rode the Louge which is kind of like a go kart track on the top of the mountain - it was ace! We picked up speed and were flying down the mountain! I wanted more goes but thought no! Be sensible matthew! We also went to a couple of good bars including world bar where they serve cocktails in teapots! I lost my hat in Queenstown though so i am now very sad.
We are now in Christchurch which is a very British looking city - not a massive lot going on but its nice to see and walk around. Today we walked around the markets and art galleries and will be doing more of the same tomorrow before we jet off to Oz! We went to the museum and saw a replica of a house which a couple called Fred and myrtle used to live in and they became famous in NZ because they had so many shells all over the house and 1 year they had a million visitors to their little house! They were so nice and sadly no longer with us - god rest their souls!
Dont really want to leave here but im sure Oz will also be really cool. I am going to look for jobs straight away as we have a couple of things happen which mucked up the old budget and now im panicking in case no one wants me working for them! Cant imagine that though!
P.S - Happy Birthday to my little sis who is now a terrible teenager! Hope you had a brill day! x x
