Well we have now left America and are in Fiji - its a bit different here! Its amazing what we have seen of it so far and we havent even been round all the islands yet! We got here on Wednesday after missing Tuesday completely as we travelled forward 20 hours and arrived in Nadi which is on the mainland - Viti Levu. We then got a taxi over to Smugglers Cove which is our hostel on the beach. Its so nice and the sunsets were the best ive ever seen. The first day we hired Kayaks and went out into the sea - with many capsizes as we were doing 2 to a boat. We then had a couple of lazy days round the beach and the pool and just relaxed after the tiring travels around America.
We got a bus into Nadi town which was an experience - it goes to peoples houses to pick them up and does detours on the beach etc. Nadi town was very basic but really interesting - we went in for a Kava ceremony in the upstairs of a shop. Kava is a herb based drink which ALL Fijian people seem to drink. I think its rude if you refuse. It tastes like muddy water but makes your tongue go numb and makes you feel a bit drunk. We also had it with some men playing guitars at our hostel and i had 4 bowls of it and Liz caught me getting into the music too much as i had my eyes closed and head down and was swaying. It was very funny! I completely forgot where i was for a moment!
In Nadi town i also got my hair cut in a DVD shop for about 1 pound 50 (not the best haircut in the world mind!) and i got a chinese meal for 1.50 also! Cheap!
The last 2 days we hired a car and drove all around the island. It was really fun. The first night we went to near Suva which is the capital. We stayed in little huts in the middle of nowhere but it was right on the beach and again the views etc were amazing! The next day we travelled to the top of the island and drove on the worst roads i have ever seen. So many potholes and dips and parts where the road just stopped and turned into mud baths and then over wooden bridges. By the time we got to the hostel i was so tired from concentrating so hard. We thought the exhaust had fallen off also - but luckily it didnt. We got to see real Fiji though which was ace and EVERYONE we passed waved at us or shouted BULA (Hello) so we waved back. Ive never been anywhere so friendly before. The villages consisted of about 3 houses and that was it!
Tomorrow we go on an island pass for 2 weeks around the smaller islands where hopefully we will snorkel etc. There is no electricity on most islands so i wont be able to email or text probably until im in New Zealand. Dont know how we will cope with no electricity and cold showers - should be interesting anyway. Cant wait! It goes dark at 6pm as its there winter here so we could be having some early nights i think. What we didnt realise also is that none of the hostels have kitchens so we have to eat out all the time which costs quite a lot on the islands so the budget for Fiji has gone a bit wrong. I'll be living on pasta for a month in NZ!
I will message again soon x!
