We arrived at Sydney airport after 2 days of travelling and not much sleep. We jumped in a taxi and got dropped off at the office to pick up the camper we had booked through a company called Hippie Campers. It was a bit of luck that they gave us a map so we made our way to a place called Goulbourn and bought a Camps 6 book at the tourist information centre there. It cost us $60 but we knew it was going to be a good investment as it lists all the free campsites and rest stops throughout Australia. We chose a campsite to bed down in for the night and caught up on some much needed sleep.
Our Hippie Camper is fantastic - during the day the back has 2 benches and a table and at night it turns into a big double bed with a very comfy mattress made from the seat covers. It has a sink with tap and water container, the tap works on a pump system. We have a portable stove, a fridge and all the crokery and cutlery we need. It even has a safe with a code to open and is fitted with a smoke alarm (which we have removed as it went off on the first night when we were smoking!). This will be our home for the next 6 weeks so we are happy that it seems to have everything we need, the company have even provided bedding, sleeping bags and towels!
After 2 nights at campsites we finally made it into Bacchus Marsh where Lucy (Gem´s cousin) lives. We had Lucy´s address but were finding hard to find her house. Suddenly a big black "ute" started beeping at us so we pulled over and it was Lucy!!! After hugs and tears on the roadside she explained she was off to have her spray tan for the big day and explained how to get to her place. We found the house and let ourselves in as the keys were in the door....only to find out that this was Lucy´s neighbours house and we had just let ourselves in! So, after that embarrassing situation we finally parked up outside Lucy´s and met Wendy and Thomas (Lucy´s brother and sister).
It was lovely to be around family again, a pre-wedding meal had been arranged for the evening so we were scooted off to a very nice pub in the country and Wendy kindly drove the camper so that we could drink and after an emotional hug with Shirley and Barry (Lucy´s parents) we had a beautiful meal and soaked up the excitement in the air for the wedding the next day.
The morning of the wedding was spent helping Lucy pack and packing a bag for ourselves as we were staying in a hotel for the night at a place called Carloine Springs which was closer to the wedding. By the time we got to the hotel it was time to shower and change and we met with Dusty and Carole (Lucy´s God Parents) for a drink before the bus picked us up. This is when Gem realised she had left both the camera and phone at Lucy´s house. Lachie (Lucy´s hubbie to be) had asked us to bring a bottle of Jamiesons and put it under the wedding table for him to have at the meal, we realised we had left this at the hotel - not a good start to the day for us and we spent a long time apologising to Lachie, don´t think he´ll ever let us forget it. It was all such a rush!
The wedding was simply amazing. As we arrived there was a man dressed in his Scottish regalia playing the bagpipes on the lawn. After a short while we were all asked to go out onto the veranda and Lucy arrived in a pink cadillac, unfortunately it was raining but it didn´t make the slightist bit of difference, Lucy looked like a model in her crimson dress and we were all quite emotional as we walked into the room where Lachie and Lucy would say their vowels. Lucy walked in to bagpipes playing and they had both written their own very heart felt vowels, Carole was stood to one side of me and her and Dusty both had tears in their eyes, as did Thomas at the front and Shirley was emotional and proud. It was a very special ceremony.
After some delicious canopes we were shown into the marquee where the meal and reception would be in the gardens. It was very pretty and each bridesmaid and usher was announced as they walked in before Mr and Mrs Dickie arrived. The meal was fantastic, lots of meat and fish done on a BBQ then served in a buffet style with sumptuous salads. The best mans speech was very funny and Lucy and Lachie thanked everyone for coming from far and wide then the party started! We drank, danced and celebrated the night away until the bus came to take us back to the hotel.
The next day with sore heads we had a BBQ at Lucy and Lachie´s house and everyone enjoyed sitting in the sunshine telling stories of their favourite bits of the day before. The party went on into the night when a log firepit was lit and after some whiskey (yes, the one we had left at the house) we even sang some camp songs with Lucy, Lachie and Lucy´s friends from home. Matt doesn´t remember too much from that night and has promised never to drink whiskey again!
Big thanks to Lucy and Lachie for such a wonderful few days, it was fantastic! Gem loved spending time with family and will miss you all loads x
Lucy and Lachie went off to their honeymoon early the next morning and we couldn´t leave Wendy on her own in the house so the 3 of us set off to drive the Great Ocean Road for a week.....
