Melbourne
I was really questioning my sporting addiction as the alarm went off at 5 am on Boxing Day morning...all in preparation for JC and I to soak up the atmosphere of the biggest days in the sporting calendar, The Boxing Day Test at the MCG in Melbourne.
Marie was off to meet her relatives in Melbourne and joined us on the early flight with Karen and Alice following later that morning.
With Marie duly dropped off with her Uncle en route to a wine tasting, the boys headed to "The G". Wow what a stadium, 100,000 capacity and home to Australia's biggest Cricket Tests as well as four Aussie Rules 'footy' teams (you know the one with the tight shorts and vests...)
Australia were playing India and we had some great seats, although an hours rain over the lunch period did threaten to dampen spirits, a great knock by Ponting and Clarke saw the Aussies ahead by the close and we headed to the sunshine of Melbourne walking back past the Australian Tennis Open Centre, this city loves its sport.
Melbourne was great fun. With a fab hotel (The Langham) right in the middle on the Yarra river. The Barnett's spent 3 great days soaking up the sunshine, the lattes and some cool tram rides around the city. Wouldn't say it's a spectacular city like Sydney but it grows on you and has great soul. Very cool restaurants and cafes. Plus if you like to shop, this is the place. That Aussie dollar is not Pommie friendly though!
Highlights were definitely the cricket, the brunch cafes and St Kilda, a seaside town 10 mins south on the tram, quaint and almost English, minus the weather of course!
