Its been a while since we've updated the blog, some say its because were lazy but theres just so much to do sometimes the blog isnt top of the list! We spent the last three weeks in the mountain town of Banff, snowboarding most days (depending on the weather and the night before).
Banff is a pretty small town but big in comparison to most european mountain towns. It has a really simple layout of one main street which makes it easy to find everything you need. It was pretty warm when we were there, we spent some days in shorts and t-shirts. The closest ski resort to Banff is Sunshine Village which we had spring passes for, Its a pretty cool little mountain with a few awesome backcountry runs through a powder field and into a treelined canyon.
Getting up the mountain should be easy if you don't mind spending $15 a day on the bus which takes 15mins and is a complete rip off! The real way to get up the mountain is to hitch hike, as long as you dont get a ride in the back of a pickup and get pulled over by the RCMP. We got a fine of $115 each for not wearing seatbelts as there aren't any in the back of pickups! Apart from that hitch hiking is your best bet, theres allways loads of people heading up the hill at around 9am and its allways easy to get a ride back.
As far as night life goes Banff has a massive choice of bars and a few clubs, and they're fairly cheap too, almost montreal prices! The best thing we found to do was to trek up Tunnel Mountain, just up the road from the HI-hostel is a new housing complex where lots of hotel staff live for the season. Theres a hot tub, cool pool and sauna that isnt closed off to the public (yet) so we spent a lot of time in there, enjoying the view of Banff and the surrounding mountains.
After three weeks of parties and snowboarding we decided to call it a day and head for Vancouver, another 15 hour bus trip!
