The whole reason for coming to the Marlborough region is to go wine tasting, so in the morning we drove to Spring Creek where we would be staying the night and the tour was picking us up from. As the name suggests the camp site is situated next to Spring creek which is a of home the long finned eel. They are the largest freshwater eels in the world and can live to be over 100 year old, at the end of their lives they swim to Tonga to spawn then die and the young eels are brought back New Zealand on ocean currents. When we checked in, the receptionist told us they had a pet eel in the creek called Eddie, and we could go and feed him. So having plenty of time to spare we wandered down to the creek armed with half a slice of bread and some old spicy sausage we had hanging around in the fridge. As soon as we got to the waters, edge there he was as if he knew we were coming. He was also joined by several other eels, Eddie was by far the largest though at at least 6ft in length. As Mel knelt down to drop some bread in for them, 7 or 8 heads popped out of the water all trying to grab the bread from her hand, they were more like snakes than eels! It soon developed into a bit of a feeding frenzy and began to get quite violent, the duck got involved and everything. So we thought we'd best leave them to it and get ready for our tasting session. A mini bus picked us up at 11.30am, we'd chosen to do a tour rather than do it on our own in the hope that the guide would show and tell us a little more about wine and how to match them to different foods. As it turns out we were the only people on the tour for the whole day and were treated to loads of different wine tastings. We learned alot about wine and even bought three bottles to take back to the camper; two whites and a red. A Gewurztraminer, a Riesling and a Pinto Noir all of which were to go with spicier foods which we seem to eat a lot of these days. After a great day the last stop was a chocolate factory before getting dropped off back at spring creek. After making a curry for dinner we developed a weird all day drinking hangover so had a shower and went to bed.
