The town of Seventeen Seventy was named after the year Captain Cook discovered it. It's a tiny place with a residence of only 80 people. We were stopping just outside in the neighbouring town of Agnes Water. We had been told it is how Byron Bay was years ago, and as we didn't get a chance to stay there, we decided to break up our journey to Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays and stop at 1770.
The hostel was the best we had stayed in so far. It was cleaned a few times daily and with it only being there 3 years everything was new and set out like a hostel not an old house. They also laid on a free tour around the area to show us the local sights. We stopped at a house for sale in the town of 1770 overlooking the water and as everything was so cheap there we guessed it would go for about $30,000, so when our guide told us it's up for $2.2million we couldn't believe it. Another reason for the tour was to plug the local activities there.
One of the tours our guide talked about was a 4 hour, 60km tour around the area on a chopper which we had already booked for that evening. It was a bit tricky at first but so much fun when we got used to it. The roads around there were really quiet and very safe which was good as we were in a group of about 35 with some people never riding a motorbike before. Our last stop on the tour was the pub for beer and wedges whilst watching the sun set. Scooter-roo extreme! We had a great time. On our final day we had a surf lesson. It was 3 times cheaper than anywhere else and had good waves for beginners. We had loads of fun trying to surf and we both caught a few narly waves!
