We arrived at Hervey Bay and after we checked into the hostel we took a walk along the esplanade and found out that there wasn't much to do there and it was purely a stop off for Fraser Island.
The following morning we were up early to catch the ferry to Fraser to pick up our tour. There were about 30 of us and after introductions we boarded our 4 x 4 bus and then went to Basin Lake before having lunch at Central Station. In the afternoon, we went to Lake Mackenzie where we swam in the clear freshwater. The sand here was so white and powdery you could clean your jewellery in it - it was just a shame it was cloudy. That night everyone chilled out in the Dingo bar and got to know each other over a few beers and tequila - the driver Rob headed the drinking!
On day two the first stop was Eli Creek where you can float down the water towards the sea. Our next stop was Indian Head which had spectacular views over 75 mile beach. After a walk we cooled down the in the Champagne Pools before heading to see Moheno shipwreck. After dinner we said our goodbyes to the people on the two day tour and had a few more drinks with the rest of the group.
We were up early again to beat the tides and our first stop was Lake Wabby, where we walked 1.8km across the sandblow to get there. After a much needed swim we made the walk back to the bus. Aparently the wind blows the sand into the lake decreasing its size by a metre each year so hurry up if you want to see it! In the afternoon we went to Lake Birabeen, which is a lot like Lake Mackenzie but without the crowds. After this it was time to get the ferry back and say goodbye to Rob who was a brilliant guide and a top bloke. That night we had a few drinks with the people we met on the tour. We had a really good time and made some good friends which we are hoping to meet further up the east coast.
