Flying into Las Vegas we were surprised at how big the city was. Surrounding the strip there were miles of residential areas. We later learnt it is the fastest growing city in the US with 8,000 people each month moving there. We were also surprised at how hot was when we stepped out of the airport. Apparently even Las Vegas gets heat waves, from the usual 100f it was up over 120f/50c whilst we were there!
We had one week in Vegas, four nights at the top of the strip staying at Circus Circus and three at the bottom staying at Excalibur. We're so glad we spent a week as there were so many casinos to visit and things to do.
On our first full day we took a trip to the Grand Canyon via the Hoover Dam. The Dam was a very impressive man made structure whilst the Grand Canyon was mother nature at her finest, it truly was one of the seven wonders of the world! We took a 30 minute helicopter flight which took us over the South rim. It was definately one of our best experiences.
Each night we went from casino to casino trying to squeeze them all in. They all had their own theme but the gaming floors were all similar. The best view over the strip was from the 1000ft tall Stratosphere. There were some theme park rides at the top which launch you over the sides and up even higher. Jo went on a couple but someone had to take pictures so I didn't... thats my excuse for not going on the rides anyway.
Independance day seemed like every other day in Las Vegas apart from a few fireworks, everyone was drinking in the streets and in the casinos as normal.
Whilst we were in Vegas we met up with Jo's Aunties friend Mel and his wife. We wnt to a place called Red Rock which is a state of the art billion dollar casino a few miles from the strip. We had a really nice meal and went bowling which was fun.
We saw a few fountain shows at the Bellagio and went to visit the lions at the MGM Grand. Our second to last night was spent at the Monte Carlo watching master magician Lance Burton. The show was absolutely amazing... Paul Daniels has nothing! It was also 07/07/07 apparently the luckiest day to get married which meant the busiest day for weddings in las Vegas history.
Our last day in Vegas was my birthday so obviously some serious gambling and drinking was involved. When we went to bed the next morning we had more money than we went out with. It was a great birthday... I think!
