Hello everyone! We're really behind on this blog so we'll try and catch up a bit now! After a few days enjoying lovely Townsville, we decided to leave the town and take the ferry to the nearest island, Magnetic Island. The island is quite a popular holiday destination for Ozzies and many of the people working in Townsville are actually from the island. The ferry was really modern and inexpensive, and the minute we got to the ferry terminal we were greeted with 'Cold Rock' ice cream. We are ashamed to say, we bought ice cream before our trek around the island! Holly had vanilla with cookie dough, and Matt had cookies and cream ice cream with cookie dough mixed in. Just thought we'd share that with you... they were really worth it!
We set off with our naughty little treats and took up one of the walking trails around the island. This place was so beautiful, we walked up a really steep hill through the bush and at the top we looked out over the ocean. There isn't any flaws on the island at all, just beautiful, untouched scenery. So, so beautiful - we hope that the photos do it some justice! We walked for about three hours (we really enjoyed the exercise) and luckily, it was a really sunny day but not too hot that it ruined the walk. Magnetic Island gets about 350 days of sun per year (approx!) so they rave about it being the best place to live with the best weather and we have to agree! Through the walk we stumbled across loads of beautiful secluded beaches and there wasn't another person in sight. Paradise!
We stopped at a bay to the south of the island called 'Horseshoe Bay' which was a little busier than everywhere else we had been and had a bite to eat for lunch. By this time it was getting late, so we took the bus back to the port (couldn't face a 3 hour trek back to the terminal!) and then took the ferry back to mainland. It really was just such a simple, lovely day and we're so glad we did it. Thank you to cousin Tamsin who recommended it! We can't believe we were there just a few weeks after you were, wish we could have done it together!
After our days adventure, we treated ourselves to a Chai Latte (new favourite since travelling) in a coffee shop/restaurant that had just opened in Townsville that very day. It was so funny watching all the waiters and waitresses overly keen and all trying to help us at once. We got asked if we were okay about ten times during our 45 minute sit down there! We finished off the day with a bottle of red Jacobs Creek (it's cheaper here, obviously) in the van and 'Dumb and Dumber' (we have a DVD player in the van - brilliant!) and tried to get an early night ready for our scuba diving weekend...
