When we left Port Douglas, it was raining again (surprise, surprise) but we kept optimistic and ploughed through. We headed north up to Cape Tribulation and were really excited to get some good shots of the coastline. Cape Tribulation is where 'the rainforest meets the sea' and was rumored to look like something out of Jurassic Park so we went straight there! We had to cross a small river on an expensive cable ferry. The river was apparently full of crocodiles but we didn't see any. Maybe they don't like the rain either?
After a 45 minute drive through pure rainforest and over loads of little creeks and bridges over numerous rivers, we got to Cape Tribulation. We are sure it would have been so beautiful if it hadn't been teeming down with rain the entire time. We did get out of the van to have a look at one of the look out points and literally the second we got out of the van torrential rain started pouring down. We got soooo wet! But it was funny, we didn't even get a photo from the lookout as we were worried about breaking the camera! So we ran back to the van and made the decision not to camp there that night. We then realised that our return ferry receipt was missing, meaning that we would have to fork out another $20 to get back across to the mainland. Where was the ticket? After searching the entire van we thought it could have fallen out of the passenger side when we stopped for a toilet break, so we zoomed back to the spot and, sure enough, there was the receipt on the floor swimming in a pool of water!! Holly jumped out of the van to pick it up and tried to rescue the receipt by holding it agains the hot air in the van - it was hillarious, a complete wrek of a receipt and we were really worried they wouldn't accept it on the ferry, but surprisingly they did and we got away with it ... yeyyy!!! Miracles do happen.
We continued to drive in the rain more inland this time up and up steep mountains until we were driving through the 'Tablelands' which are absolutely stunning. There is rainforest everywhere and sweeping, lush green fields - it looked very similar to England. There were few houses along the way - again, very eerie and not what we're used to, and we passed a few little towns along the way that were probably home to about 5 people. We got to our destination, Moreeba which creeped us out a lot as it was another very, very small town and all the locals looked a bit suspect! When we looked at the map, we realised we were only about an hour from Cairns, so we are ashamed to say we drove back there for the night with the promise to return to Moreeba and explore some more of the Tablelands the following day!!
