After an overnight bus journey, and some interesting characters as our fellow passengers, we were very happy to arrive in Las Vegas. Driving down the highway we could see the famous hotels...we have to say though, far less impressive in the day than the evening!
We had decided to splash out and spend our time in Vegas in some fun hotels on the strip. We caught a taxi to our first hotel...the HardRock Hotel - we had a HUGE room and a big plasma screen TV - not too shabby for us backpackers!! It was baking hot, but most of the places were pumping air con, so exploring the town ' too unpleasant! We had dinner at Planet Hollywood, then went back to our hotel to hit the casino...we had allowed ourselves $50 each but we won that back and made another $50 so we decided to quit while we were ahead! It was fun to soak up the atmosphere though!
On Thursday morning we went to our next hotel...the Treasure Island, we enjoyed this one more, and the props and effects were quite impressive! After checking in we headed out to the strip to see M&M World and the various sights. We got caught up on the way by timeshare salesman, but we did get free tickets to a show for the evening, so we werent going to say no!!!
After spending most of our day in a timeshare sales headlock, we eventually escaped for dinner and then to see our free show...the V Variety Show at Planet Hollywood. We really enjoyed this show - consisting of trapeze artists, 2 Russian men who did a balancing act that made you convinced that someone was going to break a neck, but surprisingly didnt!!! These guys were balancing on each other's heads!!!! Then a magician and a few musical acts which were hilarious! A good time! Afterwards we walked the strip for nearly 2 hours taking in the sights and lights...we watched the Bellagio show - fountains set to lights and music, and the Mirage hotels' Volcano eruption. People watching was nearly just as fun! We got back to our hotel at 2am and on our way back to the room, decided on playing just $1 each on the slot....Matt won $200 in just 20 seconds!! A great way to end the night and it pretty much paid for our entire day!
After breakfast the next morning, we boarded our bus to San Diego...Vegas was a great experience, glitzy, fun and full of entertainment, but we were quite happy to leave the desert and head back to the coast!
