Well it's not the best start to a trip, we've both caught colds and spent most of the night snorting and coughing. €12 buys us two coffees in paper cups and a shared croissant (breakfast at the buffet would have been €15.50/head!)
A crew member escorts us to the car deck and by 08:15 we are out of the port and joining in with Rotterdam's rush hour traffic. Early morning mist shrouds the landscapes, the odd windmill shadowed in grey. It is fairly industrial with factory chimneys billowing steam, but amidst the built up areas we see canals, dykes and large flat fields.
We leave the main road and pull into Leiden where we easily find a camperstop car park. After toast and coffee Nick has a sleep while Ali crosses the canal into town. It's a attractive place; terraces of typical tall thin houses line the canal; there are parks and windmills and 'skinny bridges', a statue of Rembrandt who was born here and a reconstructed grain mill.
Because we are both feeling so rough we look for a suitable campsite nearby, ring to check availability and set off at 12:15 On the way Ali claims first prize by spotting three windmills first, but she is looking the other way when Nick spots the first field of flowers; score now 30,000 - 3
Twenty five minutes later we arrive at Camping de Duinpan in Noordwijkerhout, get set up on a peaceful, secluded pitch and sleep the sleep of the dead. Brief interruptions for some homemade (van made) chicken soup and milky bedtime drinks and we are out for the count again.
