Okay folks I survived my 26 (yes, 26!) hours bus ride!!! Before I get into that just to let you know...please excuse typos...ya know I don´t like proofreading to begin with and with their keyboards in addition...I´m thinking this may not be a good combo!
Okay back to the bus ride...first of all apparently I was on something when I was looking at prices for a flight because they told me some people were able to get the flight for $30!!! Yeah-I swear I saw $400..or I wouldn´t have taken the bus! It was definitely a beautiful drive...but watching people puke because of the curvey roads was not beautful! Especially when my head felt like someone just kicked me and I was ready to puke and I had only slept 1 hour and no food because even thinking about it made me feel sick! Then when I finally got to my hostel (yes, I was brave and tried a hostel by myself...it was actually really nice and great service!) I literally almost fainted! I almost asked them to get me to the hospital because I couldn´t breathe, I was so dizzy, and my head was killing me. I slept for like 10 hours and took I don´t know how many tylenols. When I finally woke up, I felt better but still wasn´t doing well. I explained to the lady of the organization that I didn´t think I could do anything today and she told me it´s because of the altitude. Many tourists have a difficult time the first couple of days, apparently. I feel fine now, though...I´m not going to lie...I can feel my heart working extra hard here!!
So I´m with my family now....and I love them. The mother is hilarious! For lunch I think I got a 6 pack from laughing so much. The daughter is 22 and the grandparents also live there but we don´t see them much. There are also two other volunteers. One is from the Netherlands and the other I won´t meet till the end of this week. The mother of the house has explained to us that they are our family and that is our house and she wants us to feel free and comfortable.
I did go to my orphanage for a quick visit. I think the kids in Costa Rica might have had more than these girls. :( I was a little disappointed because I only work 2.5 hours(I cannot find the slash so I will use decimals lol!). This one will be a little more challenging because Costa Rica didn´t have me teach English the way I thought, but here in Peru it is what they are expecting...so I´m really nervous. Bernie, I am glad I saved your e-mail cuz I´m using your stuff-well more of it! Since I only work 2.5 hours, I requested to work more hours...so they are placing me at a clinic with kids who have special needs. I´m really nervous about that...because as those of you who know me well know I am pretty sensitive to this kind of stuff and I get emotional. I already told them to expect me to cry! But I´m kinda excited about this new experience too.
As for Peru as a whole. It is a very poor country...so living here is definitely a transition for me...I think CR was a little easier because it was a little Americanized...but at the same time...how many people can say they lived in Peru? I´m really glad to be here and again I am disappointed in myself for not staying longer..but I have to admitt I was a little scared about what to expect and whether I could handle this. Oh and did I tell you guys they eat guinea pigs, lamas, and alpaca?! EWW...I used to have guinea pigs as pets. :(
I finally saw the beach and it was gorgeous! For those wanting to visit Lima, stay in Miraflores and go to Larcomar!
Okay...I haven´t found wireless so I can´t load pictures, yet, but maybe later this week. As for Machu Picchu...it´s closed for two months...I´m so bummed!
