Well this relates to our stay at Marina del Cantone at the Villagio Nettuno we have stayed here for an eight day sun and site seeing period.
The ride was easy until we hit Naples where the traffic became very heavy, always overlooked by mount Vesuvius, and as we neared the peninsula of Sorrento the traffic, went mad, the roads were tight and twisty, the traffic coming at you from every angle and the heat of the day made this a very taxing ride, but we got through and made it to our campsite in good time. Hot and sticky and my wrist ached from using the throttle so much.
We rented a small bungalow, which was self contained on a campsite, this over looked a small bay with one very twisty road in and out, so we were only going to leave the area for specific things; The sites at Pompeii and Herculaneum and a ride along the Amalfi coast, or so we thought!, the rest of the time was to be sun bathing sort of stuff. This would also allow Jack's leg to improve even more.
So for a couple of days we sunbathed and took a short ride along the amalfi coast, I got used to riding the twist and turns and trying to keep up with the scooters playing with the traffic. At Positano I heard a the rumble of other Harleys and guess what, it was our two friends we met crossing the channel, we were taking a drink in a stop at the time, so I walked out in the middle of the road and gave them a shock, by waving my drink at them, they stopped off and we chatted for a bit, then we made our separate ways, (I left them behind) .
We then went to Pompeii on the Thursday, the traffic was mad all the way there, the police were out in force, trying to make a difference!.
We found it the Pompeii site, (why are these places always in scruffy areas??)as we had got their early it was almost empty, the usual tourist spivs were getting ready for the big tour groups, so, we spent a good three hours walking the sites, but a lot of the places were closed for renovation, but it did not detract from the experience, if we had the time again a visit to the Naples Museum, would also be needed to see a lot of the artifacts removed from the site., by 11am it had heated up, the place was full of the big tour groups, we had drunk our water, so we called it a day, for refreshments and a visit to Herculaneum.
Herculaneum is much smaller and has more colour than Pompeii, however, the heat had taken over us by about two hours, so we had decided it was tie to go back to the camp. We got back to the bike, and found that the topbox had been broken into and our crash helmets and intercoms, sat nag had been stolen, grrrrr, we spoke to a local taxi driver as I was not going to leave the bike there (no helmets!) he must has spoken to the local police, well they were in a police car and that was all, no uniform. They let us follow them, no helmets to the local tourist office and directed us to a petrol station so we could by some dodgy helmets to get us back, they then said you cant report it here as it is not a good place to be, (why are these sites in such rubbish areas???) angry and hot we made it back to the campsite.
After an email the next day to local Harley shops, I tracked down some new decent helmets and intercoms from a Harley shop, so we could at least carry on, Jack will navigate (hence Sat Nag) . So another day out from the campsite to spend a few spondlies on new kit., ouch!!!
The Harley people even said Naples no good! And were not surprised.
The weekend in the Amalfi is mad with local people filling up the beaches, bringing out their super yachts, we just stayed and watched and collected colour from the sun. Still we had another day out checking the new kit to Amalfi itself which was pleasant.
We now move onto to Dubrovnik. So I get to ride all along the Amalfi coast road laden up, to Salerno then a Wild dodgy route to Bari for the overnight ferry to Croatia. We paid a visit to the Harley dealership, to get our ABC picture and see if they could fix the topbox for us. A temporary fix was done and new front brake pads as well, (more ouch!!), still they did it there and then for us, so Ta Aldo after a couple of Maccy D visits (air conditioned as it is hot), we make our way to the ferry port and our next adventure.
