Today was our last day at vryila point as we are packing up tomorrow to make our way down the old telegraph track.
I had promised everyone pancakes, purely because milk was low and we couldn't afford to waste it on cereal! Getting comfortable with the camp cooking and cooked them over the fireplace, tasted awesome. After our feast and coffee we headed off for an explore of the south end of vrilya point. It was a picturesque drive and different from the north and central areas of vrilya. The water looked deeper and lookedore reefy. It didn't take long on our beach drive to come to a halt because we saw a shadow in the shallows, within a meter of the beach. It was a black tip reef shark. Whilst looking at it we suddenly heard Angie shout "turtle!". It was awesome, we saw it poke its head up and just float around. We quickly ran to get cameras and walked back in the waters, when we got within about 2 meters from it it swam away. It was so thrilling to see a turtle swimming in the ocean, was the last on our check list of what we wanted to see. The girls and Angie got up on the roof rack of her car for a drive, the girls loved it and we loved rhe quiet (lol). We made our way up towards where the river mouth meets the sea when we saw a huge mantra ray cruising past in the shallows, spectacular. Cape York really is a unique and wonderful place, more than we could have imagined. Marty heard the rattle in the front of the Nissan worsening so got under the car to see if he could figure it out. He crawled out with the answer: we had done our tension pulley bearing! Apparently if it broke we would loose the function of the power steering and the fans which would then ultimately cook the car by overheating. So Marty decided that we should turn around and make our way back to camp to see if he could figure something out. As soon as we got back Marty was under the car and after an hour or so had made a temporary solution of greasing the bearing up. We hope to make it to Coen in one piece to get it replaced and if all goes pear shape at least Angie and Rod can tow us, only after we pull start their car though as their starter motor is still stuffed. I did have a passing thought that maybe the cars were trying to tell us something, that maybe they'd had enough! Pity we haven't though...
We had a relaxing arvo swmiming. Was a nice day, not too hot that you could actually be in the sun for a while without getting burnt. Was also had a beautiful westerly breeze coming off the ocean cooling us down.
We had had another great day with great company. Marty is worried about the car bur at least we have back up plans. Will be sad to leave tomorrow as it means we are on our way down and our time with Angie and Rod us is drawing to a close....
