We have been so busy in the last 5 days and had the most amazing times, doing things we never expected to do. We caught the bus from Noosa to Rainbow beach for an over night stop before Hervey Bay and our Fraser Island trip. We arrived at 5pm in Rainbow beach, checked in and went to the beach to see the different coloured sand cliffs which makes the town so famous. We were lucky to catch the sunset which was beautiful against the cliffs, a nice purple colour. We bumped into some friends from the previous bus, again, and had dinner and drinks - we never expected to spend so much time in bars, but we keep bumping into the same people and off course we want to be sociable!!!!
The next morning we went to Hervey Bay and again spent the day relaxing on the beach. That evening we had a team meeting to organise our fraser island trip. We booked on to a tag along drive, which used to be a self drive but due to the number of deaths they know require a driver in a lead vehicle and you can drive behind. We got together in groups, again we were fortuante to have a very nice group, and walked to the supermarket to pick up our shopping orders which we agreed on and all our camping equipment. The next morning we loaded up the 4x4 and set off to the island, over the 3 days we visited so many different sites inlcuding a white sandy beach with clear waters at lake mackensie, swimming at Lake Wollomma, feeding the turtles at lake aloma, seeing a massive shipwreck, the red canyon, the pinnacles and walking down Eli Creek. It was more than what we expected and the swimming spots were amazing, the first lake was down a massive sand dune that went on for miles, and we even swam with huge cat fish!!! (took a while though to build up the courage!!)
The campsite was a permanent site which meant we didnt need to put up tents and as it was an aborignal site there was no 9pm curfew and you could have camp fires unlike everywhere else. The first night we slept in a 10 men tent, which was very uncomfortable but quite fun, and we all cooked a massive barbecue, with way too much food!! The second night we slept in a massive hut which was slightly more comfortbale and cooked a spaghetti bolognase. Cooking was always a highlight to the evening often taken a very long time!!
During the trip we both had a go at driving the 4x4 which was a bit weird at first and scary as it felt like you were driving on the snow, so sliding everywhere, but a really good experience - so glad we had a go. We also vistited a place called Inidan Head, which was a walk up a top cliff where we were fortunate to see dolphins in the cove below, whales playing out at sea, sharks, stingrays and all sorts of wildlife, including massive lizards and huge snakes on the roads (even one at our campsite).
The last day we went back to Hervey Bay and enjoyed a late night Volleyball game in the swimming pool, it was freezing but good fun and fed the local possums that lived at the hostel - so cute!!
We are now in the town of 1770 where we did a scooteroo tour yesterday which involved us riding our very own motorbike!!! We had leather jackets with flames given to us and took of to the sound of Born to Be Wild - there was 40 of us and looked really good. Martin choose a bike that looked like a Harley and I took one with slightly lower handle bars!! It was wobbly and scary to start with but we were soon speeding around the town for 3hours, crowding up the streets and watching kangaroos bouncing besides us. We drove to the Harbour where we all had potato wedges watching the sun set and then headed back. One of the best expereiences on the trip, never expected to ride a motorbike and its apparently now in the top 5 things to do in Australia and we can see why - its a must do. Another day on the beach today surfing and of to the cattle station tomorrow to learn to crack a whip, ride a horse etc. Try and do photos soon. Hope all is well at home.
